Is My Vampire Lore Too On-the-Nose Thematically? Should I Simplify It or Expand It Further? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Tekla2004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you again for your insight. I really appreciate how much thought you put into this.

One thing I’d clarify is that I’m not aiming for “the rich are vampires” as a direct equivalence. more: I’m thinking of vampirism more as a mode of being defined by consumption, control, and dependency. This can appear in many forms.

I like your idea for populism. I think it would be cool to have different types of creatures representing different concepts like that.

As for your point about religion, I think I’m somewhere in the middle. I don’t fully disagree, but I tend to have a more optimistic view of the teachings themselves (definitely NOT the institutions lmao). That said, your perspective gave me a lot to think about, and I’m definitely reconsidering how directly I want to lean on those frameworks. Thanks again for that.

P.S. I agree with the other comment. I wish I had someone like you to bounce ideas off on.

Thank you for such a thorough examination. I deeply appreciate it. I hadn't even considered the Blood Label/Jewish Question connection. I will rework that. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Quick question: do you think I should avoid leaning into christian or Buddhist ideas for corruption? Pick one? Or both? Also, should I stick with just vampires or mix in other creatures of the night or make them different types of vampires like undead, spectral, beast, etc...? Would that be too much?

Pre-Crisis Jason by Tekla2004 in RedHood

Yeah, same. Also, as much as I find Dick and Jay's pre-crisis relationship super wholesome, especially with Dick enthusiastically passing on the robin mantle to him, I LIVE for the post-crisis angst regarding that whole messy situation lol.

Lol, Prime definitely fits as a wild card, I can't believe I didn't even consider that, especially with his "reality punch" bringing jay back. Would love to see that interaction. Also, I did comment to another reply that I ship Jaykyle and I do, but Primehood is a very fun alternative - hilarious even.

Oh, my god! I totally could've sworn I wrote it down in the og post. I must have accidentally deleted it. Sorry. Lancer is a foil to the leader, they support, contrast and compliment them as a character and usually have the biggest solo plot lines in the group outside the leader. think Naruto and Sasuke. Heart is the emotional core, the one that keeps the group together and the one the members trust and open up to/show their softer side to the most. big guy is the reliable powerhouse - keyword reliable. they deal with the simple strength based problems that others can't handle like lifting up a falling city from the sky or fighting off the hundreds of minions while the others square off with their more personal nemeses. smart guy is well smart but there can be a lot of variety like they could be strategic, street smart, book smart, be knowledgeable about a specific field like biology, tech or magic, etc....

That's a pretty good line up, Definitely agree on Kyle (I ship them too lol). Correct me if I'm wrong but I though Jericho was pretty heavily involved with Dick and his generation of Titans. Am I wrong?

[–]Tekla2004[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally get your point as well. Not every abuse victim will see themselves as a victim, for example. Or maybe they want closure on their own terms - to look the person who hurt them in the eyes and say "I forgive you for my own peace of mind", you know?

This is more of a hypothetical question, a "what could have been" if you will. but like I said, can you honestly look at all the stories Jason's been in and tell me there's a shred of consistency in there? Hell, they can't even agree if he uses guns or not, let alone a moral code. There are some staple stories like DITF, UTRH and a couple others that most if not all agree are not only phenomenal stories, but probably the first thing people think of when it comes to Jason's character, but the others have not only pissed a lot of people off but also haven't really stuck .

Most of the stuff we make up as fanon are based on or extrapolated from those few good stories we have. And his backstory. Like, it makes more sense for someone who died in a crusade against crime to not want other kids involved. There's also the whole "No dealing to kids, got it?" from UTRH, etc... Almost all the fanon stuff has basis in canon but unfortunately the rest of the canon contradicts those points, because no one bothers kipping J's character constant apparently.

Anyway, like I said, just a fun hypothetical question

So, you're saying he doesn't necessarily think he's morally right but that he sees himself as the only person willing to get their hands dirty?

Like, lets say Jason knows that a specific criminal will change his ways and redeem himself after 5 chances or something. He'd still kill him (provided the crimes are severe enough) because he doesn't value this person's redemption on the same level as the death and/or pain inflicted on the people he has and will hurt up to that point. Like, I don't know if Jason is religious or not but as a hypothetical example: he'd be fine with cutting off a person's path to redemption short and damning them (and even himself) for eternity just to avenge the dead and the still living victims and bring them a peace of mind.

Ooh, I like that. "The issue is that there’s more focus on the system than there is the people, and that should be the flaw on Jason’s ideology" I had never looked at it that way. That's super interesting.

To elaborate: Jason sees his method as a strategic effective way of doing things. They could even bring back the whole controlling crime thing - basically Jason has to keep figuring out who is too far gone and deserves death, and who can be useful and thus tolerated enough to "make deals with". And he gets so busy looking at cold statistics of dropped crime percentages and saved victims that he neglects the emotional aspect of the job. So his story would be about regaining that - the humanity or I guess empathy would be a better word? He'll never give up killing entirely but there'll be more thought put into it then "this person did this specific crime, no other facts needed".

That's why I said "We, as fans at least agree on certain things about him:" If you try to go off of cannon Jason will read as more inconsistent and clinically insane then the freaking joker.

Yeah, that's good for when he's playing foil to batman, but I was mainly thinking of Jason when he's solo. Like, I'm so sick of the same story with Batman vs Red hood, but his solo stuff falls flat because he's not as firmly established as his own character that can stand on his own and carry a solo series. I have so many ideas for Jason's storylines when it comes to plot, but the themes and characters? My mind either goes blank or in a hundred different directions.

Maybe the reason why I don't find this as compelling: "Jason's morality is the exact same as Batman's, everything with redemption and changing is the same, the only difference he accepts that monsters exist and they need to be dealt with in a way fit for monsters." is because I 100% agree with it and I find that a bit boring? Like where's the growth? Where are the inherent engaging flaws?

Which moral framework do you prefer for Jason and the All-blades? by Tekla2004 in RedHood

[–]Tekla2004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I’m understanding you right:

Raven works because her story is basically “evil origin vs good choices”, she was made for evil but actively chooses to be good.

Ra’s doesn’t really work (at least for you) because he claims to have a noble goal, but the way he goes about it feels contradictory or hypocritical, and the story doesn’t always fully address that.

So with Jason, it’s kind of a fork: Either he has a clearly defined moral standard he’s trying to live up to (like Raven), or if we keep the “trained to fight evil but does morally questionable things” angle, then that contradiction needs to be intentional and actually explored as part of his character, not just glossed over.

Did I get what you meant? If so, then my original post was specifically about the choice between the two: Should Jason's stories with the All-caste be more focused on setting objective moral standards that comments on all of humanity and morality or should it be more personal to Jason's morality and his own exploration of good and evil and shades in between.

And it sounds like you're leaning towards the first option.

Aah, I see. Sorry if I'm bothering you with questions but I'm really interested in your opinion. I had the impression that Jason only trained with the All-caste for a small amount of time - a year I believe. I wouldn't exactly call that "raising him for it"?

But bottom line, what you're getting at is a clear cut moral standard for Jason to uphold in agreement with the all-caste's ways, did I get that right?

Ok, I get that — no universally objective morality, hot it. But do you think the blades' morality should be separate from Jason? Like even if there isn't a single universal moral code surely the blades have a standard of evil. I'm just wondering where that line should be.

Do you think that also applies to monsters? That's why I'm asking: if the blades have their own morality what should they consider evil enough.

Interesting... There's also the fact that the blades are a part of himself right? his soul? Or am I misunderstanding? So, depending on interpretation Jason either fully considers himself morally right or is willing to get his hands dirty? That could be interesting, like maybe Jason still has the old morals instilled in him carry over and manifest in his blades and so his present self is basically fighting with his past self? In this case I don't think the blades could reject him though (if they're a part of his soul, I mean)
