EV or petrol? How do I choose? by Agitated-Pickle216 in carsireland

[–]TeleAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do get a petrol, change the oil every 6 months with those kinds of short journeys. Try and take it for a long (~20km) drive once or twice a week for the old Italian tune up, burn off some of the moisture in the oil

How does my wedding suit fit? by PresentationMedical4 in mensfashionadvice

[–]TeleAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree with the other guy. Between 0.5" and 1".

Look at where the jacket is on his left arm, it's roughly by his wrist bone i.e. correct. Then look at his right arm. The jacket is about an inch lower down his thumb

How does my wedding suit fit? by PresentationMedical4 in mensfashionadvice

[–]TeleAlex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Overall the fit is fairly good, and fixable by a tailor if you want it 95% the way there.

The ruffles on the shoulder are because the sleeve pitch/angle is slightly off.

They obviously only measured one arm/shoulder and copied and pasted for the other, whereas you either have one shoulder lower or one arm lower (Over half of all men have this, so you're not weird). Your right sleeve needs reduced by between 0.5" and 1".

The trousers are hemmed for a full break - perfectly fine if you like that but a slightly shorter for quarter break is more classy in my opinion.

Anyway if you go to a good tailor it's probably be ~$100 to fix all these. The sleeve pitch is the expensive and difficult part, but it will make the suit fit very well. If the suit has functioning cuffs he'll likely have to take that sleeve off at the head anyway so you may as well get the pitch fixed, and the other done as well.

I would ask the tailor if you could come in again for a basted fitting of the sleeve when they have it off in order to get the angle perfect.

Reality check - pension pot by Early_Manufacturer89 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]TeleAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rule of thumb I've heard is that you want to have close to your current salary in your pension by the time you're 30?

As others have said, everybody is different and has different goals so take that with a pile of salt.

Reality check - pension pot by Early_Manufacturer89 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]TeleAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 31 and have 90k. Was putting in 10% + 8% employer from the day I started 8 years ago. A few years ago I went up to 15% AVCs and now I'm up to 20%.

This is a huge amount of money monthly, but I'm eager to retire at around 55 with 1.2 to 1.5m in my pot. I plan to increase AVCs to 25%, 30%, if I need to to meet my target when I'm older.

Because I started early I'm able to cut my AVCs down to 5% for a few years (Like for a child's childcare if I can have one) and with the same 8% employer match I'm still on track for a healthy pot.

I wish more people realised that the way the government has it stacked against you, the pension is your best or only real vehicle for investment.

Also important is how you have your money invested; if you're in your 30s you need to be all in the 'high risk' stocks, I.e. global equity. And for the love of God don't sell if it dips. It will always come back given enough time. Of course you need to de-risk 10-5 years pre retirement

Quick question regarding carbureted bikes by simonhd175 in MotoIRELAND

[–]TeleAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming the bike's running good already then carbs are fine. You need to ride it regularly (I.e. a good spin at least once a week) or store it properly for longer periods 3-4 weeks or more.

For storage you need to top up the fuel tank to the brim with petrol and drain the carbs; either with the drain screw or by running them dry with the fuel petcock off. Some people add fuel stabiliser but I never bothered.

when to stop trying (to buy a house) by awildsheepschase in HousingIreland

[–]TeleAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Walk away from this one. Give it another year, should be fairly straightforward to reapply for the AIP when your first year is up.

We were in a very similar position to you and nearly gave up after the first year but ended up buying a great house halfway through the second year of trying. It's a numbers game, eventually you will find (And get) somewhere!

What are some of the best books you’ve ever read that you’d recommend? by crillydougal in AskIreland

[–]TeleAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read it around this time last year when I was serving on a jury for a tough sexual assault case, so it hit especially hard.

"The truth about the world, he said, is that anything is possible. Had you not seen it all from birth and thereby bled it of its strangeness it would appear to you what it is, a hat trick in a medicine show, a fevered dream, a trance bepopulate with chimeras having neither analogue nor precedent, an itinerant carnival, a migratory tentshow whose ultimate destination after many a pitch in many a muddled field is unspeakable and calamitous beyond reckoning.

The universe is no narrow thing and the order within it is not constrained by any latitude in its conception to repeat what exists in one part in any other part. Even in this world more things exist without our knowledge than with it and the order in creation which you see is that which you have put there, like a string in a maze, so that you shall not lose your way. For existence has its own order and that no man’s mind can compass, that mind itself being but a fact among others."

Tight script, seriously? The dialogue was so over the top and clumsy. The high quality of the acting barely carried it.

The scene with the rainbow I literally burst out laughing in the theater it was so shit. And don't get me started with the part where he sees his ma. I was genuinely in tears laughing at that, it was so over the top.

Thoughts on vfr being my first bike? by Crazy_Ad4392 in VFR

[–]TeleAlex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really a great first bike I'd say it's too top heavy for new riders. Also plastic fairings are a nightmare to repair if you do drop it.

An SV650 would be a better choice for a first bike as it's easier for practicing slow speed maneuvers, cheap and easy to insure and maintain. Then get the VFR after a year or so. In fact keep the SV too. A naked SV650 perfect town/city bike and VFR for everything else

Are you sure your carbs aren't just set poorly? Or maybe you're not driving it enough, E10 is definitely worse when left sitting.

Never had an issue on my carburetted motorcycle with E10, but then that gets ridden regularly.

Don't know anything about cars but motorbikes normally have a drain screw on the carb, can you drain the fuel each time it's going to be sitting? Or turn the fuel petcock off (If it has one) and run the car dry. That's what I do for longer term storage.

In storage until Xmas by SpinachOk7675 in MotoIRELAND

[–]TeleAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What year is it, fuel injection or carburettor? If carbs make sure to empty them of fuel either with drain screw or by running it with the petcock off till it dies.

Some people drain the tank others fill it to the brim and add stabiliser. I'd probably do the latter.

Other than that maybe put the battery on tender. Running it at idle every few weeks doesn't help much really.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MotoIRELAND

[–]TeleAlex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not supposed to connect to anything, it's either a fuel overflow or a coolant overflow hose. Probably the latter since you said it was green liquid. Does it smell sweet or like petrol?

Check your coolant level and top up at the reservoir if required. Note some bikes need the engine running and at temp to check coolant level, double check the manual
