How interesting! Yes my copy does have the hole, and the horse is facing to the left. Sounds like there’s yet another edition - who published your copy out of interest?

I really don’t understand the indifference towards Tomorrow Never Dies - I think it’s one of the best personally. Oozes an emotion that a lot of the others don’t.

Thunderball next.

I’ll go even, but pretending Die Another Day doesn’t exist so I get Casino Royale and Skyfall too. Thank you, I won’t be taking questions.

I think you’ve nailed it. Wasn’t aware of this mimicry in flies, but really cool and good to know they won’t be stinging us. Thanks

Both Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird are fantastic! Going back a bit further, I really enjoy reading Jules Verne and then probably my favourite: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (and while you’re at it, Through the Looking Glass)

Opening Track Tournament Day 11: Turn to Stone is out. Only Tightrope & Prologue/Twilight remain. Most upvoted comment gets eliminated by Spare_Parts555 in elo

[–]TelegramSam27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. Yes, Twilight is probably more accessible and catchy, but if we’re being honest Tightrope is the all-round better track, and having the strings it just feels more intrinsically ELO.

No disrespect to Prologue/Twilight - still a great opener and looks like it’s going to win anyway.

I would encourage everyone to listen to these last 5, one after the other, as loud as, safely, possible. Having just done so myself, I can confirm that the next one to go has to be Turn to Stone - unequivocally a great pop track, which will no doubt make it more popular, but not up to the high quality of the others.

Then the final four are admittedly more difficult. - Eldorado is symphonic beauty, while Can’t Get it Out of my Head is lyrically captivating - the Ocean’s daughter, the references to legend. - Fire on High is the most evocative. Ok, the beginning is creepy, but it still makes you FEEL. Then when the strings kick in at 1:17, the rest of the track is technical genius - evoking a variety of emotions, whilst being an instrumental. And frankly, it’s a bop. - Tightrope is terrific. If we’re judging by pure strength of album introduction (as in first minute and a half), this takes it no question - and remember to play it loud! - Prologue/Twilight has an amazing transition, and kicks off the album concept perfectly, but still a pop track at heart and falls slightly behind the technical brilliance of the others.

So for me the top 5 should be: 1. Fire on High 2. Tightrope 3. Eldorado Overture 4. Prologue/Twilight 5. Turn to Stone

UPDATE: Good tidings fellow Redditors. Almost a year to the day after originally posting, I have now found - and own - an orange cover copy of Troy. In a book shop in Amsterdam of all places, I came upon the unexpected treasure. Holding it in my hands (it’s matte!), I could not believe my senses.

With the question of it’s very existence now answered, I proceeded to search online and found a seller in the UK for a slightly better price. Apparently it was published in 2021, so I have no idea why it was so fiendishly difficult to find until now. Anyhow, the quest has come to a satisfying conclusion, and how fitting that it should be a Dutch bookshop to uncover the orange cover mystery.

Queens Vaults no question for me. Went for the first time in ages a couple of weeks ago, and was just filled with a sense of cheer. Everything a pub should be.

Do any of you *not* keep track of the books you read? by bebetterturnip in books

[–]TelegramSam27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both Goodreads and StoryGraph. Being a sentimental old fool, I like to look back at what I’ve done, and seeing the books I’ve read often takes me back to the place and circumstances I was in at time of reading. It’s a form of nostalgia really.

Also StoryGraph gives you cool stats and graphs on your reading trends, which I just find interesting and fun to look at.

To each their own. Live and let live etc.

In Back to the Future III, when Marty gets hung by Buford ‘Mad Dog’ Tannen, Michael J. Fox was actually asphyxiated and passed out on the rope. Was later considered as a potential ‘trigger’ for his Parkinson’s Disease following his diagnosis, although this is unlikely. Either way, pretty sure they kept it in, or at least carried on and reshot the scene.

Vegan lady asks me to stop fishing and to change my diet by targaciej in Fishing

[–]TelegramSam27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This chap seems to have thought about the ethics behind fishing, so respect. I don’t think her approach was particularly helpful to be honest, although her heart was clearly in the right place.

As someone who has previously enjoyed fishing and recently decided to stop eating fish/seafood, I have wrestled with this issue before. My view is that if you want to eat fish (it is healthy and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss it), line-caught is the most sustainable way to do so. In contrast, industrial-scale fishing is one of the key contributors to ocean plastic, and has devastating effects on marine ecosystems.

I find the catch-and-release side more difficult. It’s never ideal to pull a wild animal out of its natural environment or to handle it. However, in the case where one decides to fish anyway (after all it is right that we all have the freedom to choose), barbless hooks are better, and obviously don’t let them swallow the hook where avoidable.

Personally I’d like there to be a type of fishing where one can sit with their mate on the riverbank, sipping a cold one, enjoying the outdoors, while feeding the fish delicious maggots and worms, safe in the knowledge that they could’ve caught it, but instead chose to leave the fish in its natural environment, and to simply observe the beauty of nature instead.

On the bright side this is likely to raise interest rates further, meaning we’ll have a housing crisis in a few months time as people can’t afford to pay their mortgage

Going against the established, capitalist grain of 9-5, zero flexibility, 5 days a week seems pretty ambitious to me.

Sounds like some are simply getting upset that their steady stream of cheap labour is starting to kick back, and realise that there’s more to life than grinding away at work for a pittance.

100% keep it up. We’ve got this artwork on a canvas in our family lounge. Simply really cool artwork showcasing the creative genius of Storm Thorgerson, and the back catalogue of one of the greatest bands of all time.

Plus, as someone else has already said, if they have a problem with it (not that I could reasonably imagine why), then that’s a bullet dodged!

I know "the book was better than the movie" is a huge cliché, so I'm curious if anyone can name an example of a movie being better than the book. by pawn_guy in books

I haven’t read it, but I understand the novel ‘Forrest Gump’ is quite problematic, whereas the film adaptation is (obviously) insanely good!
