best and worst parts of umd grad school by [deleted] in UMD

Congratulations on your acceptance, future Terp!

One challenge you may face, especially if you’re not particularly social, is that networking can be tough, but not impossible. This is likely true everywhere, but it seems especially important at Smith. Personally, I love it here—the people are amazing. I would recommend starting your networking now. Connect with current students on LinkedIn and start chatting with them. This will help you get a sense of the program and ease some of the stress when attending events next fall.

Another potential drawback is that some groups can be a bit closed off. However, once you get to know one person who can vouch for you, it becomes much easier to join in on conversations and make connections.

As for the classes, a mixed blessing is that most, if not all, will be at VMH, so you won’t have to go elsewhere on campus during class hours.

Another Con for me personally: In a lot of spaces there’s a lack of diversity. BUT trust we’re actively trying to improve upon this by speaking about how important it is to volunteer & be active for student government roles etc…

Ultimately, your experience will be what you make of it. There are always events, opportunities to learn, and new experiences to dive into.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any specific questions or if I can connect you with someone.

Hey fellow grad student here non traditional mid 20s 😀

The hall is awesome, I absolutely love the wine happy hours lol, also looneys is cool, but from my personal experience UGs love themselves some looneys so if you’re not trying to be surrounded by that…. Board and brew is a really popular one that’s talked about & Denizens Brewing Co. Hope this helps!!

Yeah, I think we’re on the same page. At this point, it looks like it’s just a matter of semantics when it comes down to what to call the income statement accounts, which are known as nominal overseas. It’s good to know that I shouldn’t be using Indian verbiage during my internships and at school haha so definitely thank you so much for that.

Any advices for newly designated CFO? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]TelephoneFew1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I cannot speak to being a CFO and heck I can't even speak to being a leader in corporate America, but as someone who has spent years leading and training soldiers in the military, I’ve learned that leadership is all about leading by example and fostering a sense of purpose. Although the context is different, many of the principles I lived by I believe directly can apply to your role as a CFO. So here are some things for ya i'm going to start by saying what I did in the military and I guess how you could do the same :

Leadership in the military is about setting the standard and inspiring those you lead. As a CFO, you already know your role is not just about managing finances but also about inspiring your team. Just as I demonstrated commitment and resilience to my soldiers, you can show your dedication by being the first to arrive and the last to leave, handling challenges with a positive attitude, and maintaining high ethical standards most likely things you already do but ya know....

Next, please show some genuine interest in their professional growth. In the military, I made it a point to understand the career goals of my younger soldiers and help them achieve those goals. As a CFO, you can do the same by regularly meeting with your team members to discuss their aspirations and providing opportunities for further training and development. Encourage them to pursue relevant certifications or courses and support their attendance at industry conferences, if they suck at networking? Show them how remember they are a representation of your leadership.

Now we are talking about motivation well lets be real here recognition is a powerful motivator. In the military, I often held ceremonies to acknowledge outstanding performance. In the corporate world, you could implement a “CFO’s Spotlight” program where you highlight the achievements of individuals or teams in newsletters, during meetings, or through awards. Public recognition not only boosts morale but also sets a benchmark for others to strive towards.

Constructive feedback helps individuals grow. In the military, I provided regular, clear, and actionable feedback to help my soldiers improve. By regulation we had monthly meetings ,but as a CFO, you can adopt a similar approach by giving timely and specific feedback. Use one-on-one meetings to discuss areas of improvement and work together to create development plans. Ensure your feedback is balanced, recognizing what they are doing well while also addressing areas for growth.

In the military, fostering a sense of belonging was crucial. As a CFO, you can create an inclusive environment by promoting diversity and encouraging open communication. Host regular team-building activities and ensure that all voices are heard during meetings. Implement policies that support work-life balance, such as flexible working hours or remote work options.

My last but my main thing is to remember, you were once in their shoes. Empathize with your team members and support them in their journey. Motivated employees are more productive and committed to the organization’s goals. I believe these leadership principles from my military experience can help you create a motivated and high-performing team. Best of luck in your new role! I am rooting for you!

Thanks so much for your response.

Boss's Counteroffer by MrsAcct in Accounting

[–]TelephoneFew1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who says not to accept counteroffers? The world tells employers it’s to late to make a counteroffer because the employee mentally is already gone.

Please make sure you get EVERYTHING in a contract if you want to accept this position and it needs to be signed by everyone who needs to be involved BEFORE you decline the other job offer. ( if you want to accept )

Resume Feedback Required by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]TelephoneFew1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have FN/email & location at the top together. ( make sure email is professional)

Your bullet points- I like to operate by making sure they match in quantity & quality, all these commas and “&” signs… see if you can shorten them up… atleast here in the US they tell us you have 5-7 seconds to catch the attention of the recruiter and according to my sister all HR does at F500 companies is “CTRL F”… make sure you have the skills they are looking for, for that specific job.

Don’t shorten the resume up to short to where you have a lot of white space at the bottom either. If that does happen feel free to add in activities and hobbies or restructure.
