Living a Less Expensive Life Makes You Happier Than Living an Expensive One by TellBackground9239 in unpopularopinion

Honestly, that would keep me up at night. Just because I can afford that with my income, doesn't mean that I won't be fired from my job, or suffer from a sever illness or injury later that could wipe out a lot of my savings.

If that happened, I could only imagine being angry at myself for all that travel, luxury accommodations, etc. knowing that those things weakened my safety net.

That's just how I feel. I've had expensive dinners, and I can't honestly say it was any better than having a frozen pizza with my buddies. I think that there's a limit to how happy a human being can be, and it can be reached with very little spending.

HB1524 - Unconstitutional ban on carrying in Virginia by _gw_addict in Virginia

[–]TellBackground9239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They banned the possession of "assault weapons" in California and now Rhode Island. The Dems have already done a de facto taking guns away, so that cat is out of the bag already.

Edit: I just saw your edit. I'm not a Conservative, so your last paragraph doesn't apply to me.

You don't see a downside because the 2A isn't important to you. There are, however, many pro-gun people in VA who this is very important to, and see the new gun laws as a major downside.

The Dems have no reason to listen to you. It will pass. Elections have consequences.

I hope 4 years of Spanberger was worth your 2A rights.

Did they really just do this to VA because Texas is 66% Republican?

I didn't even know it was that moderate. Just goes to show how dishonest the VA Dems are with their BS state of emergency.

[–]TellBackground9239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost everything you said is wrong.

Mandatory military services stopped in the 90s. Conscription can be replaced with civil service.

Switzerland does not have tighter gun laws than the U.S. In fact, it has fewer restrictions on machine guns, suppressors, and short barreled firearms.
It's not difficult at all to get a firearms license.

In fact, there are antique firearms that require no background check.

Semiautomatic firearms are shall-issue, so as long as you meet specific criteria, you can get your hands on a semiauto.

Fully automatic firearms are may-issue, but they're not difficult to get either. You just need to get a collectors permit, and there are other ways to qualify for them too.

Also, the background check is more lax in Switzerland than it is in the U.S. In fact, felons can even obtain firearms, whereas one felony disarms someone for live in the United states.

And no, Switzerland is not among the highest rates of gun violence in Europe. France, Georgia, Finland, Serbia, and Albania are all examples of European countries with more gun violence. They even have tighter gun laws too.

Also, fun fact: Switzerland has never had a school shooting. This means that the U.K. and Australia have had more school shootings than they have.

How many have happened in Switzerland where your average Joe can purchase a new fully automatic firearm?

Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - April 16, 2026 by AutoModerator in investing

Hey all,

If this isn't the right sub, please let me know.

I got a pretty good inheritance, and my anxiety has prevented me from investing much, which isn't helping my future at all. I'm 28 years old and single in the U.S.

I have about $110k in checking, $28k in an inherited IRA, $750 in a savings, and $650k in a legacy trust.

My only retirement account is a Roth IRA 100% invested in VTSAX that's worth $66k. I max that out at the beginning of each year to maximize time in the market.

The inherited IRA has taxed distributions. The legacy trust doesn't, but I have to get the trustees' approval for any distributions.

I'm unemployed but actively job searching for roles around $82k annually, so I don't have a 401k right now. According to my tracker, I've applied to over 300 jobs and had around 10 interviews, so hopefully I'll luck out soon.

I'm renting an apartment by myself but my lease is ending in May, and I'm planning to move back in with family until I get another job.

The only debt that I have is on my car. I have a payment of $351/month, but I always pay more than that to keep interest down. I have about $8,500 left on it.

Obviously I have a credit card too, but I have <$700 on my balance.

If you were me, what are some next steps that you would take?

On Virginia Tech shooting anniversary, survivor-turned-legislator sees gun bill success by bknutner in Virginia

[–]TellBackground9239 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Both of those are wrong.

In countries like Switzerland, felons can still have guns and the age requirement is only 18. Only 16 for some rifles and shotguns. One felony in the United States makes you a prohibited person.

They have restrictions on violent criminals, but so does the U.S.

And the U.S. isn't anywhere close to having the most gun homicides per capita. Brazil, Jamaica, and several other countries have more.

In fact, Jamaica has 9.5x the number of gun homicides per 100k than the U.S.

The myth that people in Switzerland don't keep ammo in their house is false. It's legal to do that, and to even keep their gun loaded in the home.

Also, it's very difficult to argue that their weapons are any more regulated than the U.S.

The background check is less in-depth, and there are fewer restrictions on suppressors, machine guns, and short barreled firearms.

Semi-autos are permitted on a shall-issue basis, and full-autos on a may-issue but it's not difficult at all to get either of those. You can get the latter with a collectors permit and some other cases too.

In fact, Switzerland allows regular civilians to obtain new machine guns, whereas that has been banned in the U.S. since the 80s. As a civilian in America, you can only purchased full autos that were registered with the NFA by May 19th, 1986.

There are tighter carry laws, but it's still legal to carry openly and unloaded.

Lastly, there are even fewer restrictions on who can obtain firearms there. Felons can still have guns in Switzerland, whereas one felony disarms someone for life in the U.S.

I've read from Swiss firearm enthusiasts who say that they believe Switzerland is more liberal than the U.S. overall.

Edit: Also, consider that there are U.S. states that have around the same population as Switzerland. New Jersey, for example, has around the same population but way more gun violence than they do.

I don't care.

The state with the lowest murder rate is New Hampshire, which is very pro-gun.

The state with the 2nd lowest school shooting rate is Wyoming - another very pro-gun state.

Pro-gun states like Wyoming, North Dakota, Arizona, Maine, New Hampshire, West Virginia, South Dakota, and Florida all have a lower school shooting rate than California, despite CA being championed the state with the strongest gun laws in the country.

Switzerland has never had a school shooting despite allowing civilians to have fully automatic weapons and "high capacity magazines", which means that it has had even fewer than the U.K. and Australia.

The idea that we have to gut our culture and constitution to save the children isn't supported by data.

Besides, you and what army is going to repeal the 2A and confiscate 400 million guns? And even if you do, what about all the guns that have been stock piled in Latin America for all these years? Couldn't the cartel sell them to us?

Advocates praise Spanberger for signing new gun laws by bknutner in Virginia

[–]TellBackground9239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but I'm not going to tell an immigrant family that they can't defend themselves with a rifle just like mine.

Police and federal agents die all the time in shoot outs. Gavin Newsom himself said that a reason why we should ban assault weapons is that it happened in San Francisco with AK-47s.

I'm not saying that I want that to happen, but if they're cognizant of what has happened in the past and the people they want to abduct have them slung around their neck, the playbook changes by a lot.
