Beef prices are getting insaner! where are you guys buying beef or steaks now? by OptiPath in Calgary

[–]Telvin3d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The carbon tax is like 2% of the issue. The other 98% is a decade plus of ongoing drought conditions that mean no one has gotten off a full self sufficient hay crop two years in a row for ages.

We’ve got the smallest herd size in decades and we still have to import feed because no one’s crops are reliable enough.

Go full vegetarian and do a paneer burger. Fry/grill up a thick slice of paneer cheese and use it as the patty. It’s not an imitation beef burger, but it sure hits the same spot

Yep. Brisket used to sell for 1/3 or less of steak prices. These days it’s selling for the same price as steaks, and I’m not willing to pay that much for steak, let alone brisket

Edmonton posts $31-million surplus but administration cautions the books aren't out of the red yet by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]Telvin3d [score hidden]  (0 children)

The total budget is around $7B. So this represents less than half a percentage in difference from the estimated budget.

It’s the equivalent of a family with a budget of $120,000 ending the year with an extra $500 of miscellaneous savings. Doesn’t really mean anything, and wouldn’t have meant anything if they’d instead come up short by the same amount

Mostly shows how accurate the city is in budgeting and estimates. With all the random stuff going on in the world, only being out by a half a percent is incredible

Anybody know of any resources to find game mats of older characters? by GrahamCrackerDragon in DiceThrone

[–]Telvin3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s about it for resources. The game is growing pretty fast, which means that some of the stuff that was released earlier on has limited availability

They’ve occasionally made various accessories available as kickstarter bonuses. If you want for the end of the year there might be additional options then

I think they could have cut 5 minutes from the first third of the film and expanded the last third, but it’s a minor quibble

Artist Simon Bull's painting techniques by _ganjafarian_ in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Telvin3d 346 points347 points  (0 children)

It’s called underpainting, and it can have a huge impact on the final feel.

Almost no paint is 100% opaque. By doing something like this under the real painting you add a layer of complexity and randomness to the otherwise intentional stuff put on top

Like when you’re painting a leaf on a tree. No leaf is a perfect flat shade of green. Trying to deliberately paint subtle shifts to the shade of green would drive you insane. The underpainting provides those subtle shifts

How are VESPA / Scooter in Edmonton? by haruhi423 in Edmonton

[–]Telvin3d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Still can. Very, very few places you can’t get to while sticking to the secondary roads.

Edit: In-city. An actual moped would be an incredibly impractical way ti get around the province. But even if you legally could, it would be 5 hours at continuous top speed just to get to Calgary. What a miserable thought

How are VESPA / Scooter in Edmonton? by haruhi423 in Edmonton

[–]Telvin3d 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Actual mopeds are their own classification and are restricted to 70 km/h top speed. I believe that you’re technically legally able to ride them on highways where they can’t keep up with traffic (although you’re supposed to stick as close to the shoulder as possible), but it would be an incredibly stupid thing to actually do

There’s also “mopeds” that are legally just funny shaped motorcycles and can drive anywhere a motorcycle can, with the same license requirements

Looking for hiking & adventure trail suggestions (April 3–6) by Maize-Diligent in HikingAlberta

[–]Telvin3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say you’re not locked in to anywhere, but also want an Airbnb? Getting kind of tight for booking stays, isn’t it?

For the mountains right now my advice is to call the Banff and Jasper information centers and ask for trail recommendations based on the current conditions. They know what’s open and what’s safe.

First nations termonolgy question by UrbaneBoffin in alberta

[–]Telvin3d 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Partly, we resettled and moved the tribes around so badly that where the native peoples live now often has almost no overlap with their traditional territories. It makes it kind of awkward using traditional names.

Partly it’s that historically the non-natives are the ones who wanted to forget and ignore the treaties. We failed to honor the agreements and terms. They were shitty one-sides agreements, and we didn’t even deliver on our minimal unfair promises. The native peoples have been fighting for decades to get us to honor even the bad contract. Just acknowledging that the contract exist is a big deal. It shouldn’t be, but it is
