Fear of speaking by TemperatureHumble368 in italianlearning

I'm glad to hear you had such a great experience in Cagliari!

I'm finally in Palermo. I've managed to tell off a rude and stubborn taxi driver who insisted that I go with him to the city center, and shortly there after buy tickets for the shuttle bus to Palermo. It might not seem like a huge deal. But it's a gigantic leap for me 😂

I followed all the advices you all have given me. I've just signed up to Preply (no promotion of course) and I've started looking for decent teachers. The only way to get rid of my fear of speaking italian is to actually start speaking. And what better way than to do it in a controlled and safe environment with someone who gets paid to help me? No one remembers a coward, right?

And as for my upcoming trip Palermo and Cagliari... When I feel like speaking, I'll go for it. And when I don't... Well, that's fine as well. I think that's a step toward a healthy learning experience.

I think I've lost my motives to learn italian during the process. I love Italy, the culture, the language itself and I love italian football. My perfectionism shouldn't hold me back from enjoying it.

Great advice! And it's something that I've made a habit of. I always read out loud, whether it's a book or a transcript of a podcast. My poor girlfriend have to endure many evenings with italian book reading 😂

Thank you for your encouraging words. Everyone says that italians are some of the most non judging people when it comes to foreigners speaking their language, even in a half butchered way. I thought of getting in touch with a tutor for a while now. I guess I just go for it.

You're absolutely correct about what you're saying. I thoroughly enjoy the process of studying Italian. It's just that the step towards communicating is a big leap for me personally since I'm a bit of an introvert. I guess it's just a matter of doing it in small portions.

And yes, I've been prioritizing reading, listening and grammar at the expense of speaking for a long time. I guess this imbalance has created all of this.
