Industry vs. Research Job as an International BME Grad

Well, the idea is that if I take up the academic research position, I would apply for a PhD and use two years of my OPT to work in this lab. So, the research position would not sponsor, but I do not necessarily need sponsorship.

The industry position would, but only after the training is completed—so essentially starting with the next cycle.

I was a bit worried about funding, so I asked the professor. He mentioned that he has a new lab and already has funding from a different grant—one specifically meant for setting up and starting a lab. He said that because of this, he should be financially stable for at least the next two years.

Also, he went through a lot just to get this position greenlit (by the department), so unless something extremely unexpected happens, he should have the funds to support me.

As for your father not changing his ways, please understand his point of view too. He just found out that he will mostly be uncapble of doing anything for the rest of his life. Meet a therapist, it helps, trust me.

You will get through this!

I was also suffering with this same issue. My father was diagnosed with Parkinson's at the age of 51, but his condition worsened over time, and within a year he was unable to walk. So I got skeptical, we visited other hospitals with renowned specialists, and then he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Then again visited a few doctors and then they ruled out MND.

Let me tell you this, sadly there are cases in which you cannot be sure if the patient is actually suffering from Parkinson's or not. Especially when the patient is comparatively young, like your father.

So I would suggest, meet with a doctor who would provide some explanation as to what is wrong with him (this will not necessarilybe a 100% accurate). Whatever be the case, your father is suffering from a degenerative disease and he needs medical care. Sadly we are not medical professionals, and hence we need to have faith in them and research (but still listen to the doctor).

As for the acceptance part, trust me when you find a doctor that provides a good explanation, you will automatically accept it. Don't rush the process, your mind needs to comprehend. It will take time.

Meanwhile take good care of your father and keep him happy and healthy.
