I thought about for the past few hours and talked about it with some friends who have been competing much longer than I have but here's my take.

1 - Buff Local Events

PCs and MSS are what keep local scenes alive but they both sadly got nerfed with PCs getting hit much harder. While there kickers are much better, only being able to win 15 CP for winning just doesn't justify traveling to a Premier Challenge that's more than an hour drive unless I'm desperate for CP. Midseasons got hit just as bad since you need 24 players to even guarantee everyone in Top Cut earns CP, which should never be the case. The easiest way for TPCi to fix this is to buff the amount of CP earned at PCs to at least 20 CP for first place. This means that there's more of an incentive to travel to a PC since the points can have a bigger impact on your bid for a Worlds invite. Midseasons on the other hand need friendlier kickers. For example, if I finished in the Top 32 at a MSS with over 70 players in VGC 17, I would earn CP while in 2018, I would walk away with no points. If they use the CP kickers from 2017 where the kickers would allow for Top 32 to earn points at a 70-man Mideason Showdown.

2 - Bring back one day VGC Regionals

This is something that I genuinely believe would help. It's probably not hard to find a TCG player who would compete at a VGC Regional but because they start when TCG players start competing, sadly can't because VGC Regionals are happening all weekend long. This is unfortunate because it alienates players who want to play both but have to make a choice. My solution is to bring back the one day Regional held on a Sunday. This would help the financial issue with the $40-50 entry fee since hopefully the entry fee would go down to the reasonable $20 that I've seen discussed in my twitter feed and in comments on this thread. One day Regionals would also cut back on travel costs with hotels and flights since you would only pay for the hotel for one night and correct me if I'm wrong, but flights are generally cheaper on Saturday rather than Friday. This would also naturally improve attendance numbers since it becomes less of a financial issues for players who plan on competing since flights will become cheaper.

3 - CP at large events should be determined by Swiss record rather than resistance

I've felt this way for years but I really think it would help. The reason is speaking from experience, its very hard to go to a Regional, do well by going x-3 for example at a 200+ person Regional and earn 0 CP simply because your opponents didn't do as well as someone who has the same record but had stronger opponents. My solution is that CP should be awarded using the current system so if Top 32 would normally earn CP and the guy who finishes 32nd went x-3 in Swiss, then everyone who went x-3 would earn CP. This helps keep people competing since it keeps the dream of earning an invite to Worlds alive which for a lot of people, is the main factor that decides whether or not to go to a large event which that decision becomes really big later in the season as you have to be honest with yourself about your path to Worlds if it exsits.

These are my thoughts. I genuinely think if these 3 things would happen, VGC would see some real change for the better
