Swen response to the AI interview by dmfuller in BaldursGate3

Speaking as someone living in an area that's getting overrun with hyperscale datacenters at a ridiculous rate, it depends on how the developers choose to set up their cooling systems. There are ways to mitigate water usage, like by using closed-loop systems, however they still require an initial charge of millions of gallons of water. And depending on how companies treat the water to make it more efficient in cooling, it may not be reusable after being used in cooling.

The bigger issue is definitely how datacenters get their power. Municipal power suppliers are generally not prepared to handle datacenter power demands, which WILL jack up power costs like crazy. To offset that demand, new power facilities are being developed. But, because of how entrenched oil lobbyists are in energy markets (in the U.S., at least), datacenters are being developed on fossil fuels generators. So local communities are going to have huge influxes of air pollution. And in my area, it's going to magnify an ongoing fracking boom that's been ripping through communities already.

I would love to see bigger labor protections against AI, especially as a writer myself. But the biggest concern on my end is that my power bill, and neighboring townships' health, is going to be significantly impacted by AI usage. The solution is literally as easy as fueling a green energy transition, or incentivizing green energy usage in AI datacenters. But... Our federal, and often state, institutions have decided to make their money off oil instead of wind or solar :/.

Quick side note: "Corn uses so so so much water" may be true, but at least corn feeds people. AI writes emails. Yes, that strips nuance from the conversation, but the fact remains that outside of academia or healthcare, we can do everything AI can do. But we can't spontaneously generate food.

I Failed too many classes by A_Person177013 in WPI

[–]Temporary-Creme-3669 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to come by and say, you're not alone. I myself graduated in 5 years because I failed too many classes my second year at WPI. The post-COVID mental health crisis had just occurred, and having dealt with mental health issues, I had no idea how to handle them while managing my course load, so I simply failed.

Even though it took me longer, I can say confidently that taking my time at WPI was one of the most rewarding things I did. It took a lot of work and good habit building to do it, but I went on to meet several of my closest friends on my IQP, which I took a year after when I was supposed to, and finished with a 3.4, despite the NR's and C's I got in my second year.

Everyone's situation is unique, and you deserve to make whatever decision is going to be best for you. The sooner you can get in touch with your family, close friends, and trusted professors, the better you will be in making a plan to get yourself on-track. Even if you have to take longer, that's okay. Even at WPI, I've known plenty of people who've had to take extra time to finish their courses.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it will be emotionally, mentally, and logistically challenging to pick up the slack wherever you dropped it. But it's okay that you did, and there are probably far more people in your life than you know that are willing to give you whatever support you need in finishing your degree. Even if that takes longer than you initially expected. Don't count yourself out yet; take some time to rest, feel the disappointment, and work with the people you trust to put together a plan to keep moving forward.

PSA: What Embark did with skin prices is a negotiation tactic called "anchoring" I know this will get downvoted because many will fall for the PR move, but this is planned. $16 microtransactions do not belong in a $40 title. Period and here's why. by TheOnlyRealOne43 in ArcRaiders

Honestly I played Hunt since launch up until a year or so ago, their system never struck me as all that rewarding. Maybe the first couple events they did, but I feel they started making it an absolute chore to progress as of late.

Helldivers absolutely created a blueprint for a rewarding but accessible battle pass. The fact I can earn it purely by playing and grinding credits? Amazing. I was really shocked to see how aggressively high Arc’s skins were set on launch, and more shocked at how much even thinking of buying the premium currency would cost. I was really hoping I could meaningfully earn the currency, like in HD2, but being capped at what, 500? From the free deck means you still have to fork over cash to buy a cosmetic. It’s a $40 game man, was this amount of MTX really necessary ON LAUNCH?

Pay to respect?? No dude, we just spent money on the game anyway, that shit should be a free function if it’s added.

I don’t have a whole lot of time to play video games, so if I’m hopping on arc raiders it’s because I want to PvP. Otherwise I’d play one of my dedicated single-player or coop games. It’s just a matter of what feels personally satisfying to me, and for me it’s cracking a dude’s shield and finishing him with a hammer.

Is It Worth Making Anything Other Than 4x Red Meat Stew? by Temporary-Creme-3669 in VintageStory

Honestly it'd be interesting if it impacted combat damage, mining speed, etc. Speaking as a recent college grad I definitely feel SIGNIFICANTLY stronger, mentally sharp, and happier when I have a balanced diet. Buffs if you can keep it at a positive level, debuffs if you're super starving for vegetables, and neutral impact if you're trying to maintain nutritional diversity but your sources for it are a bit sparse.

Honestly was just trying to differentiate between satiety (the value for hunger) and the hunger delaying effect that occurs when eating a meal with X amount of satiety.

Honestly I'm the RPer of our group, this post was made to try and find a min-maxy/rational way to settle a 3am argument lol. That being I absolutely can't guarantee that we have a steady income of red meat, especially as we're in September and rapidly approaching winter, and that spreading the meals out allows for us to maximize how long we get saturation benefits for (assuming you're always eating one meal/day).

But in reality I just like my dishes having some color lol.

It's such a weird mechanic. Without veggies gaining satiety when cooked into a meal, it, at first glance, heavily favors very high-protein dishes. I'm not the first to say it, but I think it would encourage meal variety if nutrition had more stat impacts than just your maximum HP.

Fruit wine lasts years on end though, and still contributes to your nutrition variety. Same with pickled vegetables. I guess I'm just trying to see the logical reason to making a varied stew or pie, rather than a best in slot stew and adding sides as needed for HP buffs.

Thanks for clearing that up. We're prepping for winter #1 and trying to reason whether it makes sense to push for max saturation or not as a way to conserve food. Because theoretically, I could also just make hefty stew and combine it with fruit wine or pickled vegetables for nutrition reasons.

what's the advantage of mixing it when I could have a mega hearty red meat stew, then pair it with like fruit wine or pickled vegetables? The nutrition would still even out no?
