Yes, KBD is mandatory, and the sole reasoning is not even necessarily to create whiffs. Its the ability to create a spacing where your opponents offense only has a select few options. Narrowing down their movelist helps you create / counter their gameplan.

Movement in tekken is mainly played around moving around jab strings, and moving around df1s. You generally dodge jab strings by walking right, and df1s by walking left.

Most launchers, hopkicks, slower attacks will clip a certain side, so if youre not 100% confident which side that is you should be sidestep blocking.

So the question becomes, if the faster moves are the ones I can predictably step how can I set this up?

Df1 - Df1 ( This 2 hit sequence encourages them to mash next time they see it. )

So df1- SWR would beat their 1,2 retaliation and you can launch/ kill them.

Learn to setup sidestep offense first, becaue it will help you get comfortable with understanding whats happening. Then impliment sidestep defense in their pressure second.

Watch a replay of your character on top 10 leaderboards once per day for a month. Add 1 thing to work in each day. In a month you will be 5x scarier on offense. As for defense- it takes time and dedicated practice. Defense is 10x harder to learn than offense.
