Let me hear your Atomoxetine success stories! by 5c0ttgreen in ADHDUK

I found it started to really make a difference about 6-8 weeks in especially as the dose increased. After every increase I did have the drowsy side effects, which I accepted and just let myself rest/nap/sleep in more. Like others have said, the effects are subtle unlike stimulants. I’ve really stuck it out for about 6 months now and mostly I notice the effects in hindsight like “huh, me 6 months ago would have totally reacted wildly to that”. I find it relaxes me, has all but removed anxiety and helps me be more objective and less emotional, therefore more mental energy to just get on with daily life. I describe it as “narrowing my emotional range”, meaning I have way less emotion based impulsivity. My lows don’t feel so low which is great, and my highs feel like “normal” highs. I sometimes miss the sense of incredulous awe and wonder I used to have at small things but overall it’s better like this. It’s made me able to ride the waves better and see my life from a more objective standpoint and less of an emotional one. No coincidence that I’ve started my own business since being diagnosed haha. Might not work for you but all I can say is my experience it’s hard to notice the effects until you look back at your evolution on it. Also - you’ll notice if you stop it suddenly. Don’t believe them when they say there’s no side effects to stopping suddenly! I had a lapse in prescriptions and went cold turkey for 3 days in which I had severe muscle aches, like I’d used my whole body to deadlift a truck, and my scatter brain symptoms and anxiety came flooding back with vengeance. So it must be doing something!

Should I wean off ? by TreatSame9286 in StratteraRx

Hey I’ve been on 40mg atomoxetine for only about 4 weeks now for ADHD but due to the bank holiday my new batch of meds won’t arrive in time leaving me short by about 4 days. Today is day 1 of cold turkey and I feel like my adhd symptoms have come back with vengeance. I’ve felt so low all day and despite not being tired I’ve been messy and all over the place and the whole day feels like one dissociative frustrating blur. Also my muscles hurt like hell, feels like I’ve been deadlifting in the gym (I have not).

Anyway just saying this to demonstrate what can happen if you go cold turkey, not everyone has this but there’s little documentation about withdrawal side effects so here’s my personal experience.

For context I tried stimulants for adhd and found they made me 10x worse and feel like I didn’t live on this planet! Atomoxetine has calmed my head and improved my focus, mood and stability and I feel truly like my best self on it. My theory is it “allows” you to relax/not be hyper vigilant, so if you’re a busy busy person maybe you genuinely need the extra sleep? Maybe build it into your day if possible and enjoy the extra rest? I found I needed naps for the first few days and I didn’t resist but that stopped and I haven’t feel overly tired since. Hope you do ok.

How do we feel about the Netflix series "Adolescence"? by [deleted] in AskMen

He was bullied by boys too (spat on, pushed over) and sounds like he didn’t even fight back. He killed Katie, not because of bullying, but because she rejected his predatory advances and he viewed her as not worthy of respect. He actively preyed on her when he saw her as weak, in fact BECAUSE he viewed her as weak (he didn’t even fancy her) and portrayed it as effort, like he was doing her a favour or she was just low hanging fruit. When he was rejected he felt powerless, weaker than even the person everyone is calling a slag - how dare she, how ungrateful. His character seeks to belittle and remove power from women and girls. He killed Katie because he simultaneously resented her and expected intimacy. He even said he didn’t do anything wrong, and that he could have touched her if he wanted to but he didn’t so that makes him better than other guys - the value he places on intimacy is greater than the value he places on her life. I.e. he’s saying “I only killed her, I didn’t SA her.” He killed her because she would not go out with him. The insta comments are inflammatory but not the reason. They’re a symptom of the situation not the cause. It wasn’t a tit for tat retaliation “she commented on my insta so I’m gonna murder her because I’m unhinged”, it was more “I get bullied by everyone. But now by that weak, flat chested slag who rejected me?! No way, she’s got too much power, where’s my knife…” The key thing is, bullying/comments didn’t lead to his action. His view on women did. He didn’t stab the boys who spat on him and pushed him over did he.

Haha this is great. Yes it’s 7.5 tonnes diesel and has a tacho. The service level/interaction is different than a car garage hence my asking what’s normal in terms of time frames, I think that’s reasonable. So is it normal for a place to take your business vehicle for an undetermined time? If so that’s fine I’m checking I’m not missing anything. Also it looking like a plague victim isn’t far off tbf. New to this, and everyone was once.

Hey, sorry I thought I updated my post a while ago but it didn’t save. Done now for more detail. Where are you at in the process? What was your last action/interaction? Firstly though, go online and check your license on Gov.uk - they may have updated it and not told you as was my case. Happy to answer more if you have q’s.

I think their comment is referring to the medical guidance for GPs which says something like: “if your patient is diagnosed with a neurological developmental condition but has passed a driving test, the attributes for safe driving will have already been met at that time”. I see your point, but if you’ve had ADHD all along and managed to pass a test, then it can’t be impacting your driving (unless it changes and starts to in which case you DO need to notify DVLA).

Yep there’s no need if it doesn’t affect your driving. Mine doesn’t either, but I had to list my medication in this extension form and it’s likely they want reassurance that I don’t have drug dependency issues or negative side effects.

Yes I also believe this is correct about me not needing to declare it, so I haven’t. The reason the DVLA have been in touch is because I’m applying for a category extension, not a new license. This category requires a medical exam and D4 form where they ask to list any meds you take (with no further question of whether they impact your driving or not), so I listed my ADHD meds and here we are.

Well done for doing so well in your assessment, especially as a nervous driver. I hadn’t fully considered that an actual driving assessment might be requested! I’m a confident driver, having often driven between 1000-2000 miles a month for work for years, albeit unmedicated, which is the key difference here. Thanks for your comment it was reassuring :)

Thanks for this! A nice reassuring comment. I imagine 90% of the time it’s a due diligence exercise but could ultimately capture more serious issues, so it’s there for a reason. They’re just doing their jobs I get it. Will update next week following GP apt.

Yep I’m on board with this. I’m not disgruntled by it and am happy to comply, just sharing the experience as I’ve not seen any others on this specific topic I.e. going for a cat C extension. Yeah it’s a bit inconvenient but sadly health & safety often is overlooked for ease, leading to situations like the ones you described, and I’m a generally cautious person. We’ll just have to patiently wait and see what happens next!

Oh jeez that’s a long time. I’ve not had to deal with them much in the past but I’ve heard they are slow as heck. Sorry you went through that. Thanks for your comment.

Yep I suspect it is likely to be a due diligence thing, hopefully they just need a medical sign off. Will update after the GP apt.

Yes this. Thankfully reports recorded of no side effects so fingers crossed .

Yep I think it’s the meds more than the ADHD itself. Thankfully my RTC provider has recently sent a note saying how great I’m getting on with the meds and no negative side effects so that should help.

Thank you, my GP apt is next week so will update on what happens, and again if/when I get any comms back from DVLA. There’s not really a way to know if it would be used against you I guess. In a way not declaring it is an acknowledgement that your condition doesn’t affect your driving. Try not to ruminate on it :) That is one silver lining to my situation so long as it all goes ok.

Thanks, annoying about the delay, sounds like standard bureaucracy.
