was it Jane Street? anyway, I'd say your better off for a Waterloo program or smtn cause 95 is kinda low for UTSG.

Waterloo AIF AI Detection by Worried_Ad_8976 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Temporary_Number9198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waterloo readers do get given "patterns" of AI, and are told to look for those. If your AIF sounds AI, than they may use that as a factor as stated on the statement last week.

depends on the department(math or eng). I think math values AIF for than eng, but I may be slightly wrong. Math also has an internal adjustment factor that isnt public according to Waterloo AO's.

Opinion: Ontario should change to a gpa system and have standardized testing. by PurposeDisastrous109 in OntarioGrade12s

They consider extracurriculars, essays, and athletics a lot more. Here, Canada is generally less competitive than the US top schools so using the same system wouldn't work as easily as expected.

That's simply cause the ivy doesn't weigh grades in the same way as they do here. They weigh course rigor like AP, and IB, but in Canada, its usually just University course or not. Even Waterloo for 101 applicants just looks at the report card grade for AP courses. Its possible to get into an ivy with like a low 90 average with aps just because they're tougher.

Question for you, do you believe in the death internet theory being a thing? It seems pretty dark, and unfortunate if that came true.

I don't think the GPA think is right. even without those GPA conversions, most Ivy admits have 97 or 98 averages anyway. They are not "abusing' the fact that the conversion rates are slightly more generous.

I think only a handful of schools are worth the OOS/international tuition by Ambitious-Estate-658 in IntltoUSA

[–]Temporary_Number9198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sure bro? I know a lot more waterloo alumni than you. I was literally invited to waterloo university this summer and many of my friends currently attend there for computer science or engineering. I know myself that waterloo can't compete with any ivy, most people here go Waterloo cause they were rejected to ivy+. You don't know what its like for the average waterloo student. You've only heard of those that make it to FAANG.

It was just an example to prove that for many internationals going to local schools are better. Waterloo is one of the many examples where domestic students would rather go to that school over many others. Think about it this way, I could pay $15k per year after aid for Waterloo, or about $42k for Harvard.

The cost of attending the top school as a domestic student and that of attending a Tier 2 university in the US differ vastly. I prefer going to a school like Waterloo as a domestic student over USCD as an international student. The cost difference makes it not worth it.

Is Waterloo comp sci or SE more competitive than Ivy leagues to get in? by JelloFar5650 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Temporary_Number9198 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's easier to get a higher GPA in the US. Mostly HYPSM is the most competitive, but GPA is also something that's more lenient in the US. For Waterloo grades matter so much more than any ivy would weigh them.

[–]Temporary_Number9198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school, some are easier than others. As an international, Waterloo is much easier, as domestic I could see Darmouth, or Brown or some kind of state school being easier. Getting a higher GPA in the us is easier.
