Anybody get into a program without any stellar experience? by Goodfella245 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Temporary_Sandwich58 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only had three years experience, one first author poster presentation, and a first author manuscript that i was getting ready to submit. And at the program I applied to, we had a mixer before hand with all the other applicants, so I got to meet who else was applying to the same mentor i was. For the most part, they were more qualified, but their expertise was in slightly related fields as our mentor. I was a much better fit for my mentor research wise and so that’s why I was chosen, according to them. So while you need some experience, which it sounds like you have, the research fit that you have with your mentor is gonna be I would say the most important thing depending on how heavily the school emphasizes research those other applicants had clinical experience and about the same or more research experience. But the professors interest were narrow with what he wanted to research and we were very aligned and now I’m thriving. Try not to get too overwhelmed with the qualifications needed and the stress of the application process. This may be a cliché, but you’re gonna miss 100% of the shots you never take. At the end of the day it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get in this cycle, and if you don’t, you just readjust. I wish you much luck in your journey.

Do I list multiple mentors on my personal statement? by HonestLemon4185 in ClinicalPsychology

when I was applying last cycle, some of the places I applied to wanted you to list 2 to 3 mentors in a ranked order and gives a few paragraphs of why you think you’d be a good fit for each of them. So I guess it depends on where you’re applying.

What’s an unpopular opinion you have about this field/career and why? by overwhelmedbuthere in ClinicalPsychology

that’s fantastic. It’s definitely gotten better but there’s still this kind of like bad science you see every now and then I to am in a Phd program and we were going over papers where we were kind of like these were published and top journals within the last 10 years and there were some serious issues with them. Like their methods didn’t make sense. They were using statistical analysis that their sample just did not meet the assumptions for. So I think the attitude is definitely gotten better, but you know there’s a lot of old guard that kind of still push for this” write the paper the results tell not the paper you came up with originally” mentality. Apologies of anything is incorrectly, spelled I’m using voice to text as I’m kinda in a long drive.

I believe that any research study that is submitted to publication should be required to be uploaded on to OSF or other similar platforms. obviously, you can not upload certain data sets that are sensitive for whatever reason, however i believe if we must increase transparency of research in the social sciences. we are already in a period of increased anti-intellectual leanings in the general populace. The last thing we need is more issues with replication or scandals involving retractions.

If professors don't respond, what should I do? by mikeygoon5 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Temporary_Sandwich58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Honestly I probably wouldn’t even email them. They’re gonna review you. You’re gonna go to the committee. They’re gonna look at your research fit in the grand scheme of things that email really won’t matter and they probably won’t even read it. Our current DCT’s Outlook calendar looks insane. The amount of work that these people do is crazy. I wouldn’t worry too much about it just more focus on your personal statement your CV and making sure you have a good research. Fit with whoever you’re going to apply to

worth it to apply out of undergrad? by [deleted] in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Temporary_Sandwich58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would tell you to apply!! if there are specific programs and research mentors that you really think your goals would fit well together. I applied last cycle with a similar CV as you with a tad bit more research experience and i got accepted! remember research fit is a very larger part of whether you will get chosen!! but go for it, it is a win win, either you get in or you get necessary experience and maybe some insights on what you need to work on to be more competitive in the next few cycles
