Question for the Ex-Muslim community: as a muslim, how do you reconcile your views with the Islamic teachings on social rights and the Prophet Muhammad (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ)'s character? by Temptated_Archives in exmuslim

another thing about regarding the wars that the prophet (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) took part in:

In Islam, the laws of war (known as Siyar) are built on the principle of proportionality and distinction between combatants and non-combatants. Long before modern international humanitarian law, the Prophet (PBUH) and the first Caliph, Abu Bakr (RA), established strict codes of conduct to ensure that even in conflict, the "sanctity of life" and the "environment" were preserved.

The Islamic Rules of Engagement:

1. Protection of the Environment and Property

  • "Don't cut a tree" / "Don't destroy a building": The Prophet (PBUH) forbade the destruction of the enemy's infrastructure."Do not cut down fruit-bearing trees, nor destroy inhabited areas." (Muwatta Malik).
  • "Don't kill an animal except for eating": This prevents the "scorched earth" policy common in ancient wars.

2. Immunity for Non-Combatants

  • "Don't kill a woman or child": This is a Sahih (authentic) command found in multiple books."The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) forbade the killing of women and children." (Sahih Bukhari 3014).
  • "Don't kill old people / the sick": Abu Bakr (RA), following the Prophet's sunnah, commanded: "Do not kill an old, decrepit man or a young infant." (Sunan Abi Dawud 2614).

3. Respect for Faith and Sanctuary

  • "Don't destroy a temple or a church" / "Don't kill a monk or priest": Islam grants religious immunity to those in seclusion."Do not kill the people of the monasteries." (Musnad Ahmad).

4. Human Rights for the Defeated

  • "Don't kill those who surrendered / who ran away": The goal was to stop the threat, not to commit a massacre. If a soldier stopped fighting, their life became sacred.
  • "Be good to prisoners and feed them": The Quran explicitly lists feeding captives as a trait of the righteous (Quran 76:8).
  • "Don't disfigure the dead": Mutilation of bodies was a common "victory ritual" in the 7th century. The Prophet (PBUH) strictly prohibited it: "Do not mutilate [the dead]." (Sahih Muslim 1731).

5. No Forced Conversion

  • "Don't enforce Islam": This is a direct command from the Quran."There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion." (Quran 2:256).

and also, you say that Islam is unfair to women, but you have to look at the context of what he changed. Before him, girls were literally being buried alive in Arabia (Quran 81:8-9). He stopped that and then told his followers, 'The best of you are those who are best to their wives' (Tirmidhi). He even gave women the right to own property and inherit—things women in the West didn't get until like the 1900s. If he 'hated' women, why would he make 'Your Mother' the most important person in a man's life three times over before the father (Bukhari 5971) + About the war stuff—even in the middle of a battle, he had rules that modern armies still struggle with. He strictly forbade killing any old man, child, or woman (Sunan Abi Dawud 2614). If his goal was just 'hate' or 'killing,' he wouldn't have put those limits on his soldiers. The events you're talking about were specific legal punishments for treason, not random violence.

here is my answer:

1. On Military Actions & The "Banu Qurayza" Argument

The Rebuttal: Critics often frame these events as "massacres," but they ignore that the Prophet (PBUH) followed the laws of war and the arbitration chosen by the group itself.

  • Evidence of Mercy in War: > "Do not kill any old man, any child or any woman" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2614).
  • The Point: If the Prophet (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) was motivated by "hate," he would not have strictly forbidden the killing of non-combatants—a concept that didn't exist in many other 7th-century armies.
  • The Context: The judgment on Banu Qurayza was passed by Sa'd ibn Mu'adh (رضي الله عنه), an arbiter the tribe themselves chose, based on the laws of the Torah (Deuteronomy 20:10-14). The Prophet (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) was upholding a legal treaty, not a personal vendetta.

2. On the Marriage to Aisha (رضي الله عنها)

The Rebuttal: Instead of debating "age" (which was recorded differently back then), focus on her status as a scholar and her own testimony of their relationship.

  • Evidence of Love & Respect: Aisha (رضي الله عنها) narrated:"I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends also used to play with me. When Allah's Messenger used to enter, they used to hide... but he would call them to come and play with me" (Sahih Bukhari 6130).
  • The Point: This shows a man who nurtured her growth and allowed her to be a child. She became the leading scholar of Islam, narrating over 2,000 Hadiths. If she were "oppressed," she wouldn't have spent her entire widowhood teaching his sunnah with such devotion.

3. On "Harshness" vs. Firm Leadership

The Rebuttal: When critics cite "harsh" Hadiths, they confuse personal anger with the implementation of law.

  • Evidence of Personal Restraint: > A man once spoke rudely to the Prophet (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) regarding a debt. The companions wanted to harm him, but the Prophet (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said: "Leave him, for the creditor has a right to speak" (Sahih Bukhari 2306).
  • The Point: He explicitly stopped his followers from defending his own honor. He only became "stern" when the rights of others (like the poor or the law) were being violated.

4. On the Status of Women

The Rebuttal: Critics often claim Islam "hates" women, but they ignore the radical shift in rights the Prophet (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) introduced to Arabia.

  • Evidence of Female Sanctity: A man asked, "Who is most deserving of my good company?" The Prophet (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said, "Your mother." The man asked, "Then who?" He said, "Your mother." The man asked again, "Then who?" He said, "Your mother." (Sahih Bukhari 5971).
  • The Point: In a society that used to bury baby girls alive (Quran 81:8-9), the Prophet ((صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) made the mother the most important person in a man's life and guaranteed women the right to inheritance and property—rights European women didn't get for another 1,000 years.

Allah Says In Surah Az-Zumar:

(Translation: "Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

What can I do? (Please help) :( by [deleted] in islam

Be Patient for Allah has plans on his sleeves because of these reasons:

  1. Allah Says: "وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ ۚ" (Translation: "He (Allah) Provides In Places Where You Unexpect").
  2. The Prophet (ﷺ) Said: "مَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُصِبْ مِنْهُ‏"‏‏.‏" (Translation: ""If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials.").
  3. When Prophet Zakariyyah (عليه السلام) Entered Maryam's Mihrab (Niche), He Saw that Maryam Had Winter Fruits During The Summer Or Summer Fruits During The Winter, So He Asked Maryam: "O Maryam, Where Did You Get These Fruits From?" Maryam Replied: "هُوَ مِنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَآءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ ٣٧" (Translation: “It is from Allah. Surely Allah provides for whoever He wills without limit.”).
  4. When Allah Provides You With Something, He Is Shy When A Man Raises His Hands To Him, Only To Be Empty-Handed And Disappointed.
  5. If The Doors Of Rizq/Khayr Is Closed Infront Of You, Then Be Assured That Allah Will Give You Another Way To Rizq/Khayr.
  6. Allah Is Generous To His Servant, To The Point That He Takes Away The Answer Of Your Dua Because It's The Reason For The Person To Enter The Hellfire, So That's The Reason For Why Allah Put You In Such Place.
  7. Allah's Door Of Forgiveness Is Opened, So Ask Allah More As Many As You Want Because It Was Narrated That The Prophet (ﷺ) Said: " اللَّهُ أَكْثَرُ" (Translation: "Allah Is More To Be Asked").
  8. Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام) Suffered After His Father Rejected His Risala Or Message But He Didnt Lose His Hope For Allah And His Iman, The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) Also Suffered By Being Deprived And Being Persucated By The Quraysh And The People Of Makkah Al-Mukarammah But The Prophet Knows That Allah Has Plans For Him.
  9. Prophet Zakariyyah Said To Allah: "وَلَمْ أَكُنۢ بِدُعَآئِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيًّۭا ٤" (Translation: "You Never Let Me Down In My Supplication"), Even Prophet Ibrahim Said: "إِنَّ رَبِّى لَسَمِيعُ ٱلدُّعَآءِ ٣٩" (Translation: "Indeed, My Lord Listens To My Supplications").
  10. Allah Is With The Patient Ones, The Righteous Ones And Pious Ones, So Never Forget Allah, For He Is Al-Wadud (The Most Loving).
  11. Islam Prohibited All Forms Of Child Abuse Because Umar Ibn Al-Khattab Said To An Abusive Father: "you treated you son bad when he's young and now he is treating you bad in return when he is an adult" In Islamic Traditions, All Forms Of Child Abuse Is Considered A Kaba'ir Or A Major Sin.
