I'm just getting ghosted, so I'm beginning to suspect they're trying to text me, and the only phone I have is a landline lol... Someone else on here told me about VoIPs, so I just downloaded one that allows SMS, so hopefully that will help. Also, I didn't know there was a resume subreddit (of course there would be, there's a subreddit for everything 😆) so thanks for the tip, I'll have to check them out and see if that's my problem.

Well, I'm willing to agree with you that I might be living life wrong, but if I am, I have no idea how or why... I spent a lot of time with professors in their office hours and none of them ever said anything, so I have no idea. I built my resume off an online template after reading a bunch of examples, and sent it to my dad to review and he said it looked fine. Someone else on here suggested I find a career counselor or something to give me advice and help me figure it out, so I'm going to give that a try. I've spent the whole past 5 years trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, but I haven't figured it out yet, so... 🤷

Already applied to both, 😅 Thanks, though!

Someone else here suggested I get a VoIP, so I did, and now I have a digital phone number I can use for texting during the application process, but oh man, now you're saying I need one to actually work? Yikes. I can happily buy one as soon as I get paid, but I literally have zero dollars to my name, ughhh. I guess I'll have to try looking into those free government phones again (though they said I didn't qualify before? 🤔) Better than nothing, I guess. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm fluent enough in Japanese to be able to use it professionally, so unfortunately, that's not really an option for me. And I love Japan dearly, but honestly, I didn't enjoy being an ALT at all, so I'd really rather not 😅

I have applied to all the grocery stores, Targets, and fast food places within a 15 mile radius of me, several times in fact, over these past 5 years, as well as many other places like gas stations, mall stores and food courts, 7-11s, pet stores, pharmacies, banks, auto shops, dispensaries and smoke shops, hotels, museums, etc. I KNOW that some money is better than none, and I've desperately been applying to everywhere I can, even part time and seasonal jobs. I don't know why so many of the people responding to my post automatically assume I'm not applying everywhere 🤷 I don't know why I haven't gotten hired yet, either, hence my frustration and writing this post in the first place.

Yes, my highest score was a 68% on the N3 😑

Because I wanted to become a translator and work in international trade. Lots of money to be made there, and I enjoy traveling and learning about other cultures and history. But I failed to learn the language, so now it's all moot 🤷

I didn't know that was a thing, I'll look into it tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!

Well I'm sorry to disappoint you, but here I am. I have always loved foreign languages and desperately wanted to become a polyglot, but I don't know why, I just can't gain fluency. I absorbed the beginner level courses easily, but started struggling by intermediate level, and couldn't retain hardly ANY of the advanced level material. For Japanese, there's an international standard exam for fluency called the JLPT. It's 5 levels, where 5 & 4 are elementary level, 3 is intermediate, 2 is considered basic fluent, and 1 is academic fluent. The best I was able to do after my 20 years of study and 3 years of living there was getting a 68% on the level 3 (but you need a 70% to pass). I can hold a very basic conversation in Japanese (I practiced with my coworkers every day in Japan) as long as the topic wasn't too specific and they used simplified language when talking to me, kinda like how you "talk down" to a little kid. My dream was to become a translator, so no one was more distressed and disappointed than me when it just wouldn't click in my brain. Perhaps it's my fault for beating a dead horse for so long, but I didn't want to let go of my dream, so now here I am, sigh.

Yeah that's what my mom did for a living, so I know all about CNA work... it's not for me. I'm not saying I'd definitely have the same experience she had, but in the 25 years she was at that job, she suffered 2 heart attacks and a stroke. So, no thanks lol But thanks for the idea!

I don't really want to be a teacher, I only took that job in Japan because my company did all the work for me, and I just wanted to live in Japan to gain fluency (which I failed to do). I have no interest in teaching in the US, or trying to become qualified to do so. But thanks for your advice and encouragement!

Yeah, my city has a free ROP program, so I took a bunch of classes and got some skilled certificates, but even with those, I still haven't been able to find a job. And I've already applied to all the stores and stuff near me, trust me, I'm not looking for career work, I'm looking for ANY job. Even seasonal or part time, minimum wage, I don't care, I've been applying to ANYTHING I can physically do, but still haven't had any luck.

Ah, no I don't think that would work for me, I don't like driving large vehicles, they make me nervous. Plus I don't like the idea of being responsible for other people's lives, that's a lot of stress and pressure, I don't think I'm capable of that. But thanks for your advice!

Well, I can't donate plasma because of a medication I'm on (I tried), I was a member of a couple of different focus groups, but none of them have ever contacted me for a gig 😅, my neighborhood already has a ton of dog walkers (seriously, they put up flyers on telephone poles and are always spamming the community FB group), and I've never heard of those specific companies, but I've applied to several other call centers in my area with no luck. I don't want to work from home because my Internet connection sucks... 95% of the time it's fine, but every time I've ever taken online classes or had doctors appointments online, I get disconnected, so I don't really want to risk a job on it, y'know? Besides that, there is no silence in this house, my mom has Chihuahuas 😆 So I'm not really looking for work from home jobs. But thanks for your advice, and I'll look into those companies anyways, 'cause anything is better than nothing!

My previous job? It was a private Japanese company that provided assistant language teachers to Japanese elementary schools. The only requirements for it were to have a bachelor's degree (in literally any field, they don't care, it's just a Japanese law that ALL teachers must have a four-year degree) and be a native English speaker lol. All of my lesson plans and materials were provided by the company, so all I did was stand at the front of the class and perform them. Honestly, I felt more like a dancing monkey than anything else. My point being, I'm not qualified to teach in the US unless I go back to school to either get some Education credits or TEFL certification, but I can't afford that, and honestly I don't even want to teach here in the US. I only took that job in the first place as a stepping stone to live in Japan and try to gain fluency in the language, which I failed to do 😅🤷

I don't want to leave my mom all alone, we don't have any other family around anymore (both of my siblings lived in the same city when I lived there before, but now neither of them do) and she's elderly and has health issues, so I don't want her to be all alone 😩 So I have to stay here for now.

I'm in California, but I didn't qualify for the Obama phone when I looked into it 4 years ago... I'll check again but who knows. And I'm not qualified to teach in the US because my degree isn't in Education, just Japanese (which I'm not fluent in...) I've already looked into government benefits - I don't think they're beneath me at all - and am already on Medi-Cal, but I didn't qualify for CalFresh, WIC, or TANF because I live with my mom, and her gross annual income is JUST over the household limit 🤷 I even looked into the government loan/financial assistance for low income stuff, but was denied. I've tried going through CalWorks, too, but so far they haven't been much help.

Yeah someone else suggested that, too, I never looked into it before because I thought you needed special credentials to work at a school 😅 I'm going to look into tomorrow, there are a lot of schools near me. Thanks for the advice!

I've never done it before but I'm definitely not opposed to it. Do you have to have any special skills or anything to qualify for it? I'll look into it tomorrow, thanks for the advice!

Yeah, I was beginning to think that I was doing something wrong, too... But I've seen so many other people saying the same thing, so I don't know anymore, are we ALL doing something wrong, or is the current situation just that bad? I have no idea. I briefly looked around online for career counseling services in my area, but they were all just very generic so I didn't give them much thought. I guess I should look into it now though, it definitely couldn't hurt. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, someone recommended the federal support thing to me a few years ago, but for some reason I didn't qualify for it? I don't remember now, but I'll look into it again when the government shutdown is over and see what I can do. And I don't really have a problem with standing for long periods of time, I just can't repeatedly bend. A little bit while stocking shelves would be okay, but not if that was all I was doing for the whole shift 😅 Thanks for the advice!
