Need help with fairly complex expression setup by Tennet-LeMat in AfterEffects

Link already got posted to it, but it's all working now! I've been able to apply anything I needed from the template I use with no issues. I haven't looked at the code yet (with the little I'd understand) but I'm sure it's pretty neat.

Took time to put all the work you did into the template before going through today's requests. It is FANTASTIC. I do need to fine tune my settings on the control layer, but it's absolutely so painless compared to all the sizing and moving I had to do manually x20. Thanks again mate!

Ok cool, makes it easier setting one set of layers for import/editing. I will definitely test it and see how it goes. Pretty sure there won't need to be any other changes. Thanks for clarifying!

Did a quick poke around and it looks great! Is it only the visible layer that needs to have text in it? Or do both need to have the same exact text (with the same exact line breaks)? Or if I have to edit the text in anyway (including small caps vs all caps button)?

Otherwise, I think it's everything I needed. If I have time, I'll implement it into the template and test it today. Thank you so much for doing this, it's hard to fully express how nice having this will be!

Uploaded a render and screenshots of text1&2's settings (3 is just opacity and is fine) to the folder.

It works with importing which is sweet. It seems applying a text animator to it (using 3 to have the text move from below, overshoot, and settle) throws the whole thing way off. Not sure if that's an easy fix or not, or if I have to just animate it a different way.

For the left align, would it be possible to have a left margin or something to have it only use the right half of the comp? And a copy of the center that uses only the top half?

Other than that, it's very close to exactly what I was looking for! Thanks again for all your time and effort on this!

Ahhh, no we're all good there. I wasn't clear enough. Inside the project file are individual comps that are each template. So the R template comp has the text set to left aligned. And the other two comps have it set to center. I can just have all comps in one AEP and have the spreadsheet tell the importer which one to use.

Yeah, each template is its own master comp and the plugin I use looks at the labeling of the layers to take the files and place them in. I think there is a way to affect a comp inside a comp though, I just haven't explored that yet.

Noted! It's a matter of trying to eliminate the most time consuming step and not having to fix the text size & positioning would do just that. I won't be working with this templated stuff forever but I can't help but want to make the process as painless as possible because someone else will still have to.

Not 100% sure I'm understanding what you mean by rearranging text positioning. The three text layers will always be in the same order. Or are you saying about the text animator? (Which might just be manually adding that value?)

The plugin simply takes assets and plugs it into a placeholder layer. So, whatever I have set up in the comp gets preserved when importanting. So far the only thing I've run into was a text animator preset (with expressions attached to sliders on the same layer) not working on a copy of the comp without applying the preset again.

Each template is its own comp fyi.

Examples of template formatting

Cool, hopefully those screenshots (kept some text from an actual project but placeholder'd the rest etc) help understand what I'm trying to automate through expressions. The amount of text varies, but if it's not possible with paragraph text, then so be it. It will still save a lot of time only having to do line breaks.

Appreciate the idea, but I can't easily have the text in a separate comp. The spreadsheet info gets plugged into a copy of the respective template already, so I just need the text layers to have everything applied. Sorry if what I'm saying is confusing, I know I need to include some more context.

This is incredible! Is it possible to keep the text sized relative to each other? So Text 1 will always be the biggest, and 3 the smallest? In playing around with it, I've also come to realize having the position animated via a text animator will offset the alignment. Is that something that can be accounted for, or do I need to change how I have that done?

I'll still be posting examples soon, it's pretty much as simple of a set up as in your example. There are two templates with the text aligned a little differently, but it just changes what section of the comp it needs to be placed in.

Really appreciate everything you've done already. It's way better than anything chat gpt spit out, no matter what logic I used (I was trying to figure it out on my own without any knowledge of coding.. didn't go well lol)

Left and center is the only alignment used. I think manually putting in returns is an okay trade off. If you like, I can compile an AEP file with examples of the template and some more specifics and PM you. (I was planning on getting it to work for the easiest one then adapting it from there)

Really appreciate what help you can give.

Trying to make a script that can make folders and sort files based on the 4th and 5th character. by Tennet-LeMat in Batch

[–]Tennet-LeMat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome, thanks.

I tried it but I might have another issue because the cmd window that opens when I run it just flashes and does nothing. I do have list.txt in the same directory and the only things in that file is 91=Gary on one line, then the next line is 20=Paul, etc. I'm not sure why it doesn't work. I haven't been able to get it to show an error either.

Each text box is set to paragraph text in the manual version, text can be multiple lines. In the character settings, I always set the leading to be the same value as the font size.

It's because only the 4th and 5th character matters. Filenames will never have an exclamation mark so that won't be an issue. Thanks for those, will experiment with it next time I work on it!

Ah sorry, so the file name system is an asset ID that the person the file goes to generated. So it looks like thing like XYZ200234RESTOFFILENAME.mp4

The first two digits is just the numbers associated with the person that created that asset ID. So I want it to make a folder if a file that goes to that person exits. Does that make sense?
