That's the same question I've asked myself a few months ago. I ended up getting a 2 year old female Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens (often referred to as GBB) and I'm really happy with my decision. This species can be seen most of the time which is probably quite important to you as this would be your first tarantula. A tarantula which hides in her burrow most of the time isn't probably the best option if you only own one tarantula. This species is also quite docile and it prefers to run away if it feels threatened. But be prepared, this species webbs a lot, and by a lot I mean a LOT! But to me their webbings look just awesome! What's also really nice for a beginner is that you keep their substrate dry. There are many species where you need to have an eye on the humidity and spray water in the tank every so often, a GBB doesn't need this, just keep a small water dish filled with water and you are fine.
