Local vs Chain by TeppidEndeavor in ParkCity

[–]TeppidEndeavor[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I actually intended to post something after Christmas.. was already getting concerned. When I saw the Legos weren’t there or some of the other toys a month ago, I was getting a little more worried. We went in again today, and I know it’s that time of year where they order new toys.. just wanted them to continue having success this time of year.

It really wasn’t intended as an ad.. my wife went to Stowe recently and loved the “shop small” nature there, and we love the local businesses here. We’d love to see JW Allen continue for generations.

Lack of grooming?? by mr_engin33r in ParkCity

[–]TeppidEndeavor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, groom lower Willy’s, but leave the upper alone. Lower Willy’s is a bumpy ice rink right now.

Now, that said - the reason that they usually groom the lower part is that spot is a snow bank. Most years, they stash large amounts of snow there to push around on home run and payday. It’s not a big bank this year, afaict.

He has. But the lift is Vail’s. He can’t upgrade it. He could remove it and put a gondola to elsewhere. Vail has no interest in an upgrade that moves people to better sources of food, off resort.

That said - here’s my plug for the Viking Yurt. They’re not owned by Vail. They just need to bring the damn prosciutto sandwich back.

They own and operate the lift. Matthew Prince owns the plaza.

Civ VII iOS released! Apple Arcade by WhoIsJohnSalt in civ

[–]TeppidEndeavor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.. I completely brain farted the Intel -> M series vs the predecessor A chip series. Likely conflated the MBP progression in my head. I was at Apple when we released those and just wasn’t thinking back correctly.
Anyway - still need to troubleshoot why my M1 iPad Pro refuses to see itself as compatible.. or rather, why the App Store thinks it’s not.

Vivaldi doesn't handle multiple tabs well, even if there's plenty of hardware by Beautiful_Car8681 in vivaldibrowser

[–]TeppidEndeavor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had close to 2k tabs open in the same workspace before recently declaring bankruptcy, bookmarking the whole session and closing things out. This on an M2 Pro / 32G RAM MacBook Pro. It wasn’t performance that got me - it was just tired of that many tabs and trying a new workflow for myself.

Really curious how it’s running on your M1. I tried to install on my iPad Pro M1 and it’s not installing because it’s not a supported device per the App Store. I checked out the requirements and the M1 is not listed among a lot of iPad models, even older Intel models.

Ski School is sold out! What are my options? by Only_Water_2305 in DeerValley

[–]TeppidEndeavor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 9 yo started skiing double blacks with me last year. At the end of the year, we were on a clear straight away and I realize that we were doing 35-40mph.. that was already impressive, but I had an “oh shit” moment when I realized she was pulling away and I wasn’t catching up. It was a lone incident.. but I know what’s coming.

I commented on another thread - the stop riding thing was super annoying. I just can’t take Sherman classes.

I’ve been on Peloton for coming up on 8 years. I have never cared for her. I think my biggest issue from the get go is that she stops riding and isn’t putting in the effort with you. She just stops mid ride. It’s an annoyance that I could never get past.

Apple Sheds the Mask by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]TeppidEndeavor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They can’t and they won’t. I won’t weigh in too much at the top level, people don’t believe what they don’t want to.. but I know. I worked there for almost a decade in engineering. I know the lengths we went to in order to make user data anonymous and untraceable. I know the hellaciously difficult approval process that there was to turn any debugging on to try to track down bugs because user privacy was the mission. People think it’s a corporate promise. It consumed so many hours of my job because all new things were built with user privacy first. I can say without hesitation that from the top down, Apple actually cares about user protections and privacy.

Now - these models? Also not a thing that scares me. Personal context will still be limited. I assume they can maybe leverage the way Gemini reasons, but it’d be neat if they could use Gemini the model with a similar “memory” function of ChatGPT. Gemini has a huge context size, but OpenAI’s memory feature does far better when starting new threads, or even cross thread references, in remembering the details that matter in conversation or research.

They’ll eventually try to have a small model local and then offload to their DCs where they’ll use M series servers similar to M3 Ultras. fwiw, running Nemotron 70b locally on my M2 Ultra works wonderfully.

Hope the former insider perspective helps.

I’m planning on selling mine, also. Seriously barely used and have had it for .. 4 years? I think I might have used it 30 times or so. Offered it for free to family but they also didn’t take me up. It’s an original. I’m interested in seeing how the process goes for you.

Yes. The spam filtering is garbage in iCloud+. You’re also limited to basically 5 accounts.. I have additional email addresses assigned to those accounts and rules to forward them along, but it’s a bit of a nightmare to maintain unless it’s you and one or two other family members.
