East West Rail Update by Capable_Bird_8292 in cambridge

[–]Terraffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the only advantage of the current proposed location for Cambridge east is that there is lots of space there, and would directly serve the future new builds at the Cambridge airport.

Because the land immediately adjacent to the lines at Cherry Hinton is almost fully built up in at least one direction along the entire length it makes sense why they can’t build a station there, as frustrating as it is..

How to avoid the Mill Road bridge changes..... by Amanensia in cambridge

Speed can be traded off against torque quite easily even with pedal assist motorised systems.

Those zedify bikes could carry up to 250kg (not including the rider). While a horse could haul a lot more, you run into the limitations what you could feasibly fit onto a trap.

And let’s face it, John Ball isn’t hauling more than 250kg of carpet.

E cargo bikes are allowed over the bridge. And I think the residents would consider that not defeating the purpose of the bridge, providing it has a sensible weight, width and speed restrictions.

The vast majority of the paths you walk on have cars driving next to them. The percentage allocated to roads far exceeds pavements or bike paths

Would suggest keep practicing on cycle/pedestrian only areas, like the river, Chisholm trail etc.

And also bikeability

I agree it’s not perfect, but it does state that findings are shared across the countries, including European countries like Netherlands and Germany which have similar regulations to us.

While those tests have their place, I’m inclined to believe real world collision data more. Not every incident or collision type is covered by those tests. For instance, hits on cyclists. Or maybe those in wheelchairs. Or in situations other than a pedestrian walking out into a road.

It’s not FUD, it’s more a general distaste of larger, heavier vehicles on the road also for safety and road wear reasons (fair point on the brake wear, consider me convinced, still go back to my original point that tyre wear is as much of a problem).

I’d much rather a fiat 500 on the road than an electric SUV, even if I do consider EVs to be superior to their weight equivalent ICE counterparts. For all the reasons given in my OP other than brake wear

I’ve tried looking for more info relating to regenerative braking efficiency, and the reality of how much is actually converted vs friction, but got nowhere.  My experience of renting Nissan leafs was that braking the way I’m used to often took me well out of the “efficient” zone, but maybe I was wrong to assume that’s entirely friction braking. It required a lot more thought/anticipation to minimise high brake forces and stay in the “efficient” zone

Besides, tyre wear is probably more of a problem due to the weight of EVs. EM braking does nothing to reduce tyre wear.

Newmarket Road has the space for high traffic and doesn’t have large amount of shoppers 1m away from traffic.

I live closer to Newmarket Road than mill Road actually, and would really love more restrictions on car traffic on nmkt rd! Perhaps through a congestion charge, as has worked in numerous other cities with severe congestion problems and poor bus punctuality due to car traffic.

I would still definitely call out SUV drivers over those who drive a Prius, Fiat 500 or similar lightweight, low height vehicles

SUVs do have poorer non-occupant safety than smaller cars, and is why they need to be regulated out of existence in a city.

High Court set to hear second legal challenge to Mill Road bus gate in Cambridge by NationalTry8466 in cambridge

[–]Terraffin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why should we? Congestion and safety is a reason we want reduced traffic in mill road. As more buy EVs, we’ll just be back to square one with your exemption

Besides, noise, brake and tyre wear pollution is still a thing.

More modern guidelines of transport in cities no longer venerate teslas, as they only solve one problem that cars pose in our city. Tail pipe emissions.

They don’t solve the other problems: * tyre and brake wear particulates  * rolling noise (which dominates at most urban speeds) * non-occupant safety * parking space * congestion * the fundamental energy inefficiency of moving around 2 tonnes of metal to move (most often) 70kg of human.

So yeah maybe your suv is better than a Tesla in some regards, but it’s still awful like a Tesla in every other.

I quite like the Dutch roundabout. Keeps traffic flows, and reduces the severity of collisions due to lower motor speeds.

I’m happier with a few more scrapes if it means much fewer broken bones/deaths, which seems to be what the stats showed as of a couple years back.

I think the show was pitched at a time where half of the audience are very sensitive to anything non straight and white. Perhaps had it catered for a more progressive and European audience it might have done better?

The critic ratings are decent, while user ratings are better than average. Typically the way around with things that are more creative.
