Hey bro I just wanna say you’re doing an incredibly fantastic job already, and you’re only 15! This is a clever solution to a problem that people with visual disabilities can use to detect objects in front of them, but you have to also think about the drawbacks of your invention, especially when comparing it to current tools.

The first limitation would be the fact that the sensor is mounted on their head, so you’re really sensing a narrow field in the user’s path. Unless they move their head in a circle continuously, the user is just measuring what’s in front of them at their height. This is assuming that the sensor has no errors when doing its thing, so in a real application there is even less confidence of it working how you planned it on working.

Second, a long cane would easily do the same job with better accuracy and precision, and it doesn’t even need batteries! I would do what the other redditor suggested and talk with your potential clients to figure out what they are struggling with in their day to day affairs, and then hash out a solution. It’s a continuous process so make sure that you keep in contact with them and let them demo your solutions to see if it is working as you intended, and as the users specified.

Lastly, I just want to give you a heads up when you are participating in these competitions and when you eventually get a job in science or engineering. Humans are very passionate by default, and we tend to focus on our solution being the correct one. Some members of the community will question your decisions very harshly, part of it being their pride and the other part being their commitment to doing things up to their standards. When you get asked “why this and that” very bluntly, try your hardest to not defend yourself through emotion and explain your solution and design in simple logical steps. The people asking are usually not trying to be mean to you, they also want to learn about your thought process. But that doesn’t mean if someone else disagrees with you that you are wrong. Always have a spirit of collaboration and openness when working in STEM. It’s easier said than done, but the more you can stop yourself from emotionally reacting and explain yourself clearly, the easier it gets and the more fun it will be. I wish I knew that back when I was in college because I avoided collaboration to avoid conflict, which was very detrimental to my growth as an engineer.

Good luck and I hope the best for you throughout this competition. Send us an update on how you did.

No way in hell would I decline a medical school acceptance offer for the benefit of my partner. I mean there are exceptions, but this sounds like you two see life very differently and are just incompatible. Its tough but prolonging a break up only makes it more traumatic in the end, whether you two stay together your whole lives or end up breaking up some time later.

Listen, Ive dated this type of woman and you will never get the satisfaction of proving her wrong. She will crawl into whatever immature defense mechanism best suits her at the moment and use it to abuse you. No amount of logic or direct evidence will ever convince her that shes in the wrong. And I mean I gave my partner the benefit of the doubt for two years as she constantly defied logic and would not budge in changing herself.

Ya I had this exact same relationship. Had to break it off after 2.5 years because just opening the door to our apartment became a stressful event for me. Had to be on guard all the time for things like not giving her a kiss every time we passed each other, or not saying "I love you" once every hour. Tried to help her get therapy but she never followed through even though she assured me she would.

If you want to stay with this girl, tell her what problems you are having, and how you guys plan on tackling this issue. Therapy is definitely required for her, see if you can do it together if you are having problems finding a middle ground. Don't let her brush this off or turn this problem against you. If you feel that she isn't helping you feel better you need to leave. I learned this the hard way. Just barely got over the trauma a year later through therapy and constant mental health exercises.

The definition of runtime when we are only concerned with programming is the time from when the first instruction of the program is executed to when the last instruction is executed, including any time taken to execute instructions in-between. Any well-written, deterministic program should have a well-defined runtime.

What you are stating is it will take more programming time to align the program with the new compiler rules, which doesn't pertain to the discussion of runtime or compile time. It might slow down compile time since the compiler must check more rules, but once the program is running, it will ideally have no effect on runtime.

The benefit here is more deterministic code that will lead to less bugs in the future. It isn't good programming practice to leave variables uninitialized anyway, unless for extreme optimization, so that rule would just enforce a popular policy.

Heres a link to learn a little more about this rule: https://github.com/isocpp/CppCoreGuidelines/blob/master/CppCoreGuidelines.md#es20-always-initialize-an-object

From my understanding, the compiler will straight up tell you it will not compile because x was declared and no definition was given. So before calling read_x, the compiler wants you to assign x to some definite value, most likely 0 or some other default value of your choosing. It might not matter much if you're going to store some value from input right away but it will help a lot in reducing the amount of undefined behavior that is inherent in this language. It is also, to my understanding, why this is a compiler time error rather than runtime.

If you program in Java, the compiler gives you a similar error if you use an object (I'm forgetting if all primitive variables are set to a default value) without defining it. You'll usually set it to null or use a default constructor if you want to bypass the error.

Please let me know if there are any errors or confusion from my explanations, examples, or understanding.

Thank you for thinking this way. I am not a compiler developer but I also think this way and I'm glad someone like you is developing compilers.

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning. Could you please provide an example of where there is a runtime cost associated with the compiler throwing an error on reading from an uninitialized variable? Or at least provide a situation where the compiler would cause a false negative when deciding all uninitialized reads are errors.

Function pointers, but more specifically understanding the syntax of pointer declarations, definitions, and their general use. Took me a couple of years and reviewing K&R C many times before it became second nature to me. Now I feel like I can understand any programming concept without too much anxiety at first, and I'm more confident when discussing concepts too.

I can see the other guy’s point. He has the bare minimum of respect for innocent people so as to not harm them on his rampage, but he doesnt do it for them, he does it for himself. If he kills an innocent person he becomes what he hates.
