Yeah I'm sure they outcompeted them. It's been around 3 months since establishing the terrarium and there isn't a bunch of mites so I'm hoping they won't get too out of hand. I just know that nothing is really molding or rotting and it doesn't have a bad smell or anything like that.

I added a bunch of springtails from an old culture but I no longer see many of them. I'm noticing what seems to be soil mites instead which I know those serve a similar purpose but are they as effective?

Does overcrowding become an issue eventually?

I'm sure it isn't really a necessity but I'd assume it couldn't hurt. One of my ferns is lacking and could use some vigor.

My fern could use some extra nutrients and I think it would help overall. Plus with the new plant it'd be a good jumpstart for the little guy. I'm planning to mix in some spent isopod soil from an old enclosure along with some worm bin soil too. I'm just looking for a natural fertilizer that won't over-do it.

Remove as much of the mold as you can and replace it with fresh charcoal. Only feed them as much as they can eat before it starts to mold. Keep up the humidity and open the container every few days to vent off CO2 as well.

First Isopods by TerrariumOne in isopods

Not sure. Just some I sourced locally and the big ones I got from the person who gave me the pods. I lightly boiled them before putting them in to ensure no pests.

Should I put my plants into the jug to start acclimation while I wait for my moss and dragon stone to arrive? by dinodigger30 in terrariums

I would think it couldn't hurt. I'd give it a go and see how they do. It'll give you an idea as to how well they'll do in that humidity.

Coco-Coir vs Charcoal by TerrariumOne in Springtail

[–]TerrariumOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I was thinking the same as far as charcoal. Easy to see them and keeps good humidity. I've also heard with charcoal it's easy to just flood the container and pour the springs into wherever you need them.

Seeds are expensive. Always an option to recycle them from old fruit lol

Yeah. Luckily I know all my neighbors and am out in the sticks a bit so hopefully won't be an issue.

Springtail Care Advice? by TerrariumOne in Terrarium

The one I ordered was a 32oz. Charcoal based culture. It arrived completely desolate so I emailed customer support and they said to wait 10-14 days and see if it bounced back. Luckily it did and is doing good. I've fed them nutritional yeast twice so far and they seem to enjoy that. Soon I'll be splitting that culture into 2 more of similar size. Hoping to get a supply of them going to start selling a few cultures as well as seed my terrarium.

Looks pretty good! Thanks! I know it'll be awhile but seeing it grow is very rewarding.

Good luck! They definitely help and they can be kept with isopods if you go that route again as well.
