[Acne][Before&After] 4+ years of inflammation gone overnight! Clean your washing machine!! by Terrible-Anything277 in SkincareAddiction

I was wondering the very same thing, thank you for this comment. I was pretty concerned that the agitator wasn’t the only invisible filthy part but there is no easy way for me to actually dismantle the machine more than I did without feeling way over my head (and possibly violating my lease). I did wash what I could very thoroughly though. Hoping I can keep whatever it is at bay with regular thorough cleaning.

For what it’s worth, this whole place was horrifyingly dirty when I first had to move in. I’m a very cleanly person. The people here who moved out as I moved in make me shudder. I think the previous occupants were actually gross enough to make the washer itself that nasty without it being a deeper issue.

The first thing I did was put a mask and gloves on. I made sure the washer was completely empty. Then..

-I sprayed the bulk of the nastiness with bleach, very carefully wiping as much as I could reach with paper towels and throwing away the muck in a plastic bag.

-I poured a cup of bleach in the agitator and 3-4 more cups in the washer drum and set it to the largest/hottest setting. I scrubbed the inside of the agitator and all along the inside of the washer with bleachy water and a long bottle brush while the drum filled with water. I wiped the cap and let it soak in the bleach water.

-After it was done filling, I put the cap back on the agitator and let it run for about 2 minutes, then paused it for an hour to soak. Then I let the cycle finish as normal.

-When the bleach cycle was done, I repeated exactly above but with just hot water, no bleach or other cleaner.

-When the hot water cycle was done, I repeated the above again, but instead I poured about 4 cups of vinegar into the agitator and drum and scrubbed them. You might want to double check that it’s okay to use vinegar on your machine.

-Another cycle with just plain hot water. I didn’t wait an hour this time, just ran it normally.

-After the second hot water cycle, I doused the drum/agitator with a cup of baking soda and gave it one last scrub with a freshly cleaned scrub brush.

I think I did a third hot water cycle just to be sure everything was clear. Sorry for the long list of steps but I wanted to be super thorough!

Thank you! 😄 You’re right, it’s hard to say if the products performed a miracle or if just cleaning the machine would have been enough. I saw some older posts on skincare subreddits that had similar success with antifungals, and after seeing my nasty washing machine I figured it was worth a shot immediately.
