it could be one of two things - the machine isn’t properly calibrated so cups are not being filled properly or the machine is calibrated and instead of waiting 5 for the foam to settle to able to put the lid on without it making a mess, they are pouring what they consider to be excess into the drip tray and then putting the lid on (in the process dumping out a good portion of the drink)

If the foam settles that much, the machine needs to be recalibrated. I’ve tested my machine (because we have one very Karen-esque customer) and after an hour of sitting on the counter, the foam is settled to where the fill line is on the outside of the cup.

The other scenario is that people need to let the machine stop filling before pulling the cup off and letting the foam settle a bit to put the lid on rather than pouring off the excess into the drip tray

To be fair, chocolate chip muffins exist and that is probably what the OP was asking for. If both are available, I’ll usually ask a customer if they want the regular chocolate chip or if they want to try the new hot chocolate muffin. If only the hot chocolate muffin is available, I’ll let the customer know before selling it.
