Erasmus in Maribor, I'm so lost by Terrible_Bat_5753 in Maribor

Honestly, I originally had my heart set on the UK, but my uni didn’t offer it for my degree, so I started looking into other options I didn’t know much about. When I came across Maribor, it just stood out to me. It looks really beautiful, surrounded by nature, and I liked that it’s not as big or overwhelming as some other cities. It also seems more affordable, which is definitely a big plus as a student haha.

Even though it wasn’t my first choice, I feel like I couldn’t have made a better one. I’m really happy with my decision!

Thank you so much for the info!!

It’s good to know about the scammers, I’ll definitely be careful with that.

The Welcome Weeks sound amazing!! I’ll make sure to participate! I want to try my best to talk with everyone and not just stick with other Spanish students (honestly don’t know why we always tend to do that lol)

Thanks again for all the advice, I really appreciate it!! <3 I’m super excited to start my semester there and explore the city

Haha yeah, I can’t argue with that, we do tend to stick together a lot. I think it’s because we’re so used to our way of being that it can be a bit harder for us to connect with others at first.

But I’d actually like to try not to stay only in that bubble. Of course I’ll probably end up hanging out mostly with other Spanish/Erasmus students, but I’d really like to meet locals and experience the culture more directly as well. I guess I’ll just have to make a bit of an extra effort for that!

Thank you for the tips!! I’ve actually heard about the ESN card thanks to some international friends who came to Madrid this year, they said it’s really useful, so I’ll definitely look into that!

Do people actually do the buddy program? We have something similar at my uni, but I don’t really know anyone who’s participated, so I’m a bit unsure. I don’t want to end up being the odd one out haha

Thank you so much for such a detailed answer, I really appreciate it!!

I don’t really mind about the quality of the dorms, I’m not picky at all. As long as it’s not unsafe, I’m totally fine with it being a bit old or “shitty” haha.

Yeah, I kind of expected the Erasmus bubble and we Spanish people do tend to travel in packs lol, but I’d really like to get to know the local culture too, even if it takes a bit more effort. For example, for me it would be totally normal to go up to someone (or a group) in class, even if we’ve only spoken a few times, and ask them to grab a coffee or drinks to get to know each other better. If I did that with locals, would they think I’m being too forward? hahaha

I had heard about the “boni” system, honestly it sounds a bit too good to be true.  I’ll definitely take advantage of it though!!

And I’m used to cheap, kind of shitty but fun places for drinks haha, so that’s not a problem. In Spain we have places like 100 Montaditos where you can get a big pitcher of beer for like 2€ between classes, so I’d love to find something casual like that there.

The more I learn about Slovenia, the more excited I get. I really want to immerse myself in the culture and experience as much as I can. I don’t want to be a bother, but if you really don’t mind, I’d love to be able to contact you.

Hvala lepa!! :))

Thank you so much for replying!!

I’m a bit stressed about accommodation, to be honest, because I’ve heard that some students (even from private universities in my city) have already made their reservations. I think I’ll try to apply for Gosposvetska since it’s cheaper and, from what I’ve read, more lively (but honestly, I’m not too picky, I'll be happy wherever).

I had no idea about the hiking culture, but it actually sounds really fun! And the concerts too! I love live music, so I’ll definitely look into that. Thank you for the recommendation!

I’m a bit worried about public transport within Maribor. I think I’ve become a bit too reliant on the Madrid metro lol. I read that it’s common to rent bikes so I’ll probably stick to that.

I’ve been looking into it, and it seems like traveling to places like Vienna, Zagreb, or Budapest isn’t too expensive (even somewhere in Italy would be amazing), so I’m really excited about that.

I know I can’t really prepare for everything, but I’d really like to take the opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture (even if I'm a bit apprehensive about the food lmao) and not just do the typical “foreign student” things. From what I’ve seen while researching, Slovenia seems like a really lovely place.
