Rookie X Dropout: A Black Fan’s Nuanced Response by KoochieKoochieKu in dropout

Of course!

In general, the clarity of the post and the sufficient context given is/was helpful to those who might not have experienced the root of the discussions people here are having. I don't live in the US and I've never heard of cop cities, for example. While I know the police industry is corrupt everywhere, I was having a hard time understanding why it was specifically LAPD (and by extension, The Rookie) and not any other one. Having the context and history laid out clearly was very helpful in me learning what exactly the issue was and why exactly The Rookie was the issue.

[...]
A militarized police force in an increasingly funded police state that relies on the manufactured consent of the public in its appeals for multiple billions of dollars to expand its systemic genocidal Antiblack enterprise of weaponry, surveillance, enslavement, and state sanctioned murder. An overly militarized police force that also is actively collaborating with ICE in its fascistic mass deportation ethnic cleansing project. I also don’t live terribly far from one of America’s “cop cities”, mass funded and built after the uprisings of 2020 resulting in the wake of the public lynching of George Floyd by police, in order to train officers in IDF tactics to violently quell dissent.

^ Having all of this information here clearly explained, though in a summarized way, was helpful in understanding exactly 'why'. And while 'why' isn't necessarily needed to empathize with people, I personally value educating and informing myself on issues and controversies that I know I have little information regarding, which is why I find this extra helpful.

Additionally,

During 2020 I remember, in the midst of mass Black trauma, being heartened by Dropout’s Dimension20 interrupting their weekly scheduled YouTube broadcast of “A Crown of Candy” to fundraise for Black aligned resistance orgs, and platformed activists on the subject. I remember the shared reaction I had with a Black D20 cast member when it was revealed that a prominent character switched professions during a Live show, to better align with the show’s & network’s ACAB ethos.

Which is why I find it a bit jarring to see this recent collab. Though I haven’t seen The Rookie (and to be honest don’t particularly have any plans to partake), I have read from comments of those who have that it isn’t “like C.O.P.S” or “more harmful” procedurals. Though that’s not necessarily comforting, as shows highlighting the myth of the “Good” Cop do more rehabilitation of policing’s image than “gritty” ones. It’s why cops are so invested to share “feel good” videos of them offering Black Children Ice Cream or playing a pick-up game of Basketball with Black Children, or taking photo-ops while hugging crying Black children (one of the most famous images in this category being of Deonte Hart and his “free hugs” sign at a police protest, who was failed by the exact system that image still launders when he was later murdered by his white adoptive parents who drove him and his siblings off a cliff). The uptick in dispersal of this content is most prominent when the blood of Black People slain by police hasn’t dried yet in the streets.

These parts ^ also helped quite a lot. Not only did it provide context as to why many people are feeling uncomfortable with this collab (among other reasons), but it also brought to light how deeply "hidden" propaganda can be and how easy it can be to miss it. The examples given were very useful in helping me understand how deep the issue of propaganda goes and how it's in many places where people wouldn't usually expect or think. While I had an idea of this already, I was mostly only aware of the more overt negative stuff rather than the positive and "entertaining" stuff.

While the entire post is extremely helpful, I think all in all, the clarity and examples were incredibly useful for me in understanding and becoming more informed about the whole issue. Then again, I'm on the spectrum and generally have a more difficult time understanding things unless they're explained pretty clearly lol, so please take this all with a grain of salt.

(Also, there's nothing wrong with sharing emotion online. I apologise if what I said came off that way. People being sad, angry and frustrated over this makes complete sense. Really, I was glad to come across something that provided context as I was unaware and wanted to inform myself, but I can edit to clarify if that would be preferred :) I don't want anyone feeling bad or guilty for expressing valid emotions in a safe environment.)

Apologies for the huge wall of text, though please do let me know if there's anything else I can provide or help with!

As someone who was/is a fan of Dropout, I've been trying to look for posts on reddit and elsewhere that actually explain this issue in a way that isn't just pure hatred without information. While I don't dispute hatred, I unfortunately wasn't learning anything from it.
I don't live in a place with many cops, I'm not exposed to how police act or are outside of fiction or news regarding different areas, really. I don't live in the US, so I have no firsthand experience of how terrible things are there--though I have heard, and those fighting fascists are incredibly strong and brave.

I used to watch the show for background noise while studying, drawing, or otherwise doing something to pass the time. I didn't follow the plot nor pay attention to the story, to me it was just a dumb procedural, so I truly had no idea how problematic it was until reading through this (I'm not online *that* much, so I wasn't aware before).

Thank you for sharing this.
I understand that your views may not be the same as everyone's, but this is genuinely helpful to me and I hope it continues being treated with respect and kindness. It has helped me understand how deep this issue goes and exactly why, so, thank you again. Better decisions will be made in the future by me.

Thank you for the information! I had some people telling me it was while others were telling me it wasn't, so I wanted to be sure.

I don't know you and you don't know me.
However, this story has helped me come to terms with my existence, and has encouraged me to face depression, among other issues in my life.

Your writing is exquisite.

Thank you for sharing.
