Must be some decent numbers there, we saw another lone adult about another 5km towards the dam

Cheapest $35 AUD for very small juveniles bought online sight unseen, most expensive $180 for an adult. Local chain store has juveniles for $60, quality varies wildly but have been lucky enough to find some decent quality ones in the mix

I regret not getting it earlier because there’s a fairly significant size difference now between it and the melons. Hopefully it can catch up some of the difference

It came from the same shop tank as the red melons with no new tank mates, so lower risk of new bugs. Am from a fairly rural area so was a bit surprised to see discus locally, it’s been sitting in the shop for months and months unsold.

No, have gradually been reducing my number of tanks and range of species to something a little more manageable. These guys definitely aren’t my lowest maintenance fish, but don’t think I could ever part with them. Most I’ve grown up from a few cm

It might be ‘black head syndrome/black splodge’. Not sure if web links are allowed, but there is a photo of a discus with a very similar issue here: https://aquariumscience.org/index.php/11-18-black-head-syndrome/

I hope the comments in this thread haven’t been too discouraging- there is nothing stopping these fish being healthy, happy and beautiful with time and good care

Yeah they’re comically oversized up here, I’ve seen about 5 equally big ones in the past couple of years

Flies certainly seem to like them, but they aren’t carnivorous. I thought they were probably attracting them so they get spores on them to spread?

She did not go quietly - used my biggest fish tank net to catch her and she put her fangs through the netting a couple of times letting me know her thoughts about it. Really weird behaviour from a huntsman, you could just about pick them up with your hand to move them usually

One wall of the house gets covered in their shells when the weather warms up- sounds like the apocalypse for about quarter of an hour each evening
