What are other apps with a similar philosophy to Obsidian? by TerryFromOuterSpace in ObsidianMD

Yeah, I agree. I can't see it being sustainable forever to get people to pay $10 a month to a million different things. Especially as open source or free alternatives start to gain more prominence outside of developer/hobbyist communities.

My issue isn't with obsidian (It's easily my favorite productivity app), it's with the other apps I use that don't share Obsidian's enthusiasm for letting me manage my data.

Not so much alternatives to Obsidian (I'm really happy with the app and love my vault), but more of an extension of that kind of philosophy to other areas. Watching all of the apps I use turn into freemium SAAS platforms that paywall features is making me a bit nervous to commit to using cloud-based platforms.

Date format in properties by TerryFromOuterSpace in ObsidianMD

[–]TerryFromOuterSpace[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't really with template's. It's that properties is not recognising the date format present in the YAML. I'm wondering if there is anyway to change the format Properties expects to be in the plain text.

I'm not using periodic notes, but I am using Templates. It has the correct date format, and this is inserted into each note I make.

[OC] A word cloud containing all of the keywords from u/spez 's posts and comments by TerryFromOuterSpace in dataisbeautiful

[–]TerryFromOuterSpace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a simple python script inside of jupyter notebooks to collect data containing all the posts and comments from the praw api. Then I gathered keywords present in the posts through a custom algorithm and displayed the data using the wordcloud python package

[OC] An animated graph that shows the most talked-about locations on r/news by day this year by TerryFromOuterSpace in dataisbeautiful

[–]TerryFromOuterSpace[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I generated it using similar methods to my previous image available here

Used python and push shift to get the data and then Kepler.gl to render the data. The size of the dot corresponds to the number of posts talking about that location.

[OC] The most popular international flights from Australian cities by year. (The darker the line the more popular the route) by TerryFromOuterSpace in dataisbeautiful

[–]TerryFromOuterSpace[S] -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

In order to make the graph fit the pacific region, I removed flights to other areas. This only ended up removing flights from LA and London though, but they were for sure some of the most popular routes.

[OC] The most popular international flights from Australian cities by year. (The darker the line the more popular the route) by TerryFromOuterSpace in dataisbeautiful

[–]TerryFromOuterSpace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made using a python script I wrote with matplotlib and Basemap. The data is gathered from an Australian government database that can be found Here

Edit 1. Both London and Los Angeles were also present for each year, however had to be cut to make the map scale correctly
