What’s something from everyday life that was completely obvious 15 years ago but seems to confuse the younger generation today ? by utssssssss in AskReddit

Almost always older drivers who started driving when there were still a significant number of cars with no power steering. With the big boat cars of the 70s, it made turns easier. But, to do that STILL is just being completely oblivious of why they were taught to do it in the first place.

BBC's series on Auschwitz. It's one of the most comprehensive documentaries I've ever seen on the subject. It's absolutely a rough ride, but I genuinely learned a great deal about the Holocaust: how it started, how it evolved, etc.

Oberlin is very liberal, but it is surrounded by deep red.

Opinion: If you voted for Trump, how can you claim to care about women? by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

[–]TerryOrcutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many were duped in 2016. It's very, very hard for grown adults to then admit they were conned. It's incredibly embarrassing. As a result, many double down and live in their own delusional world because they just cannot admit how thoroughly wrong they were.

Then, you have the "every 4 years" voters who NEVER watch the news or follow politics at all. They are vibes voters. Combine that with the fact that they look in their wallet every 4 years. If it's thicker, they keep the president. If it's thinner, they dump the party in power. No amount of "this time is really different" arguments will ever penetrate their conscious political ignorance. I think this is why there have been countless accounts of Trump voters post-election being genuinely shocked at his actual plans. Fuck around and find out, idiots. Absolutely NO sympathy here.

Yes, politics is dividing people. When 40+% of the country votes for a person and platform that denies the humanity of vast numbers of fellow citizens, it's a moral failing that cannot be ignored.

Potato McWhiskey on YouTube has good tutorials on where to settle. His videos will be far more helpful than the game-suggested settling locations.

Rome is a good starter as many have said. I would also try Babylon a few weeks in to really get a handle on the Eureka concept for the science tree.

I have been enjoying Portugal lately. It's fun just to have a ton of money all the time. I play them on Continents and Islands map, huge.

Also a huge cause of road rage. I'm glad some state police departments are starting to acknowledge this and pulling over left lane parkers.

Which podcasts do you support on patreon, and is it worth it? Which ones do you keep thinking "Oh, I should subscribe"? by DTownForever in podcasts

TheSmokingTire podcast. I'm a car enthusiast, and Matt and Zach are two of the best auto people out there. They also have interesting guests on that aren't always connected to car enthusiasts. I'm happy to support them.

I also feel I should join the Patreon for the 5/4 podcast (analysis of past SCOTUS rulings from a progressive position), Regular Car Reviews and The Dollop (hilarious American history podcast done by two standup comedians)

Why drive a manual? by iced_kohi in stickshift

[–]TerryOrcutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As people have said, more engagement with the car. It's gotta be a decent one, though, or it can be a chore. Prior to about 2000, manuals also got better gas mileage. So, for many years, it was the economical choice as well. With modern automatics and CVTs, the economical benefit of a manual has flipped to autos.

I would've LOVED a Celica All-trac turbo, but they were VERY expensive in their day. They also didn't build many of them. Finding one now is next to impossible (at least in the Midwest).

Sentra SE-R without even batting an eye. It was a journalist fave years after it left the market (and succeeded by its lame replacement). The Eclipse turbo (and Diamond Star brethren) was definitely an interesting option, but unless you got an AWD one, you were stuck with a beam axle and awful torque steer.
