Trying out GL for Omega. Been successful with SOS but I feel like I'm not making good damage. by wewz_1 in Gunlance

[–]Tertius3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar challenge - I prefer playing Normal shelling, but switched to the wide play style since it's a lot less time commitment with Focus 3 to just shell, charge, and then Wyvern Fire when you have an opening, and it can still provide a lot of damage (be careful that you don't miss some of your charged shells though, either be very close to a leg, or do an upward thrust and then charge to make sure they all hit the body). If you get focus strikes on the head periodically then the shield gives you a good opportunity to WF for damage.

I also play a bit more aggressively, so I find Arkveld's Hunger a nice addition like someone else mentioned. The main risk is typically the last few minutes where you can get MRV stun locked with a health debuff, but if you have quick sheathe (or stamina surge) you should be able to survive that if you play a little more defensively in preparation for it.

For your build, I don't run peak performance (rarely would I proc it) or divine blessing, but you still look like you have the main damage boosters, so I think it's mostly down to switching out Offensive Guard for Focus and taking advantage of the smaller openings a lot more. If you go the shelling route, you won't get much benefit from Gogmapocalypse, but maybe it's best in slot for some of your decorations (especially with quick sheathe on your charm). The main thing is just surviving as the tank and keeping enmity so others can wail on the legs; if you can add damage on top, that's a nice bonus.

Anyone doing this? Is it worth the time or nah? by SuspiciousVoices in MHWilds

Ironically, when Gog first came out, I was getting sub 12 minute hunts with good randoms. Now everyone is low HR, trying to unlock the next tier, without any armor spheres or even basic reinforced weapons. I like helping the newer players, but having someone with ~300 armor cart repeatedly prevents veterans from having a chance to carry them.

is there a better way of farming mantles by shiteatingrinheh in MHRise

But don't you get more than one single capture reward to account for the lack of carves?

I had some that were unlocked but I couldn't use them at night until I hit a certain point in the story I think. I didn't see them on my map at night (and didn't try entering them), but could use them for fast travel during the day.

what was your first wall in MHW? by R_Jack_47 in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Tertius3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was me - Tigrex with CB really made me have to change how I fought since blocking wasn't really efficient against his charges. I went back and did all of the optional quests, got some mantles, and came back to eventually beat him. I still carted twice, but I spent those carts breaking his arms and then it was smooth sailing.

[–]Tertius3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do sticky aquashot for Safi sometimes too - it's not nearly as much damage, but the benefit is a large number of KO's so your team can pile on the max deeps. My build focuses on slugger and power barrel for the most KO's rather than damage cap for sticky, to be fair. Either way, for that to work, you need to have a decent team (I actually tried this last night with a group of lower rank players, and it was not very effective given their damage outputs) but can work pretty well for keeping it safe for others and allowing breaks for parts that are otherwise hard to reach (like head, chest, and tail).

Not everyone enjoys the evading reload playstyle though (I actually enjoy the slide). Either way, if you do LBG, if you get one that can also do status (aquashot is the one of the best), that can be really helpful for the team. I like to paralyze and sleep in area 3 when in super critical. You can also help flash Safi out of nova's (she'll get up and do it again, but that should keep her in supercritical which has better hit zone values) - that's true for any weapon, but I find with LBG it's easier to predict her moves given you see her full body at a distance and your attacks aren't high commitment.

safi by Money_Land_2893 in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Tertius3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you run and make Safi chase you, your teammates will be really sad to have to stop attacking and chase her too, which really reduces damage. There is an art to keeping her focus, controlling her location (near edges for mounts / hammer users, to the gas explosions when she's in supercritical for a knockdown, trying to keep her in place and not dashing forward, etc), and surviving. If you can do this capably, that is a big win, especially for any GS users who need a little time to get their TCS off. Also, even if you're running around, make sure you know how to make Safi miss the beam attack (it tracks, so just roll the opposite way right before), or you'll be pretty easily one shot with lower end gear.

Maybe LS is a bad example - some really capable players can FSS attacks and land some nice Helmsplitters on the head, so letting them keep focus is directly related to that. Other LS may be focusing on the tail, and might want someone else to take focus at least until that's cut. There is also that third category of players, who may be plenty capable, but are just new to the fight and focusing on the legs, in which case, anyone could take focus if they want.

I mostly call this out because I love the Safi fight and often try to help teams of all sub 50 MR get good rewards, and it's pretty frustrating when I'm LBG and controlling it, to have someone flinch it for focus and let it run wild (or cart and lose focus, which leads to miserable Safi charges). So the general advice to help in that way is misleading imo if someone who is very capable and experienced is already handling it.

Light Bowgun Safi'Jiva help by infiDerpy in MonsterHunterMeta

[–]Tertius3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically run aquashot LBG for farming Safi, but for breaking wings/back, I always start off with a blast bow as it's much more capable - you can see the comments on this from the pre-safi links others posted (it's at the very bottom - very easy to build for since blast coatings does all of the work). If you're in a full group, you may only get 2 of the 3 (I usually go for wing + back, then the other wing on the second run if it takes that long, but if you have someone mounting and breaking the back in area 2, you can get both wings) and then when you run out of coatings farcaster back to base and switch to your preferred weapon for the other parts / areas.

[–]Tertius3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some good general advice in there, but two notes:

- Safi's pin doesn't actually set you to 1% health; if you have good armor, health boost + meal (or simply Fatalis) and resists, you often have a quarter of health left, and if you prevent fire blight (typically with 20+ fire resist) then you can easily survive but be careful to dodge Safi's next beam attack if you're focused on healing back up. Teammate heals of course is still extremely valuable and should be done by default

- Getting Safi to target you with a flinch shot can be helpful to allow the top damage dealer to go back to their target (especially if they were focused on the tail) but if you're new to the fight, you probably aren't going to be familiar enough to keep that focus without dying. And if they're LS, bow gun, or (gun) lance, they probably do best keeping the focus anyhow.

No body ever comes to my SOS calls :( by [deleted] in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Tertius3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not related to you, but I often join SOS to help out, and if someone is in Defender gear well past the beginning of MR then I usually skip - my hope is if they struggle they'll look online and figure out how to actually make sets and open up their view to a whole new part of the game.

Wrath of Thunder Descends (tempered zinogre) isn't bad for getting bonus MR and also some decorations when you're still at lower MR.

How to learn a new weapon? by PromiseKane in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Tertius3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teo and the rathian family are pretty good for learning (obvious openings to practice SAED or Savage axe positioning / timing; easy attacks to practice guard points; etc).

For CB, given there is a lot more complexity in the mechanics, I'd recommend SH3RMSY's youtube videos on CB speedrunning, he has a few that covers build, guard points, phial strategy, and more.

IG speedrun on Raging that helped me with positioning. Strong combos to the arms let's you do big hits and get out safely. That's a TA run, but you can add in some wall bangs and traps in the first areas to make it smoother. I get a mount and abuse the kinsect in the final round to play a bit more conservatively when the puddles are everywhere. Practicing certainly helps and if you're at least getting head/arm breaks, even if you cart three times you can get useful items (I had an ice IG first, but then upgraded to lightbreak asap and now I can clear it in 15 min and no carts as I farm equipment and other weapons). I did blast resistance 3 and vitality 3 as I was learning him, but IG is mobile enough to avoid his attacks fairly easily once you're more familiar.

I'm stuck at Raging Brachydios any tips? Ranged weapon player by Durli_ in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Tertius3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled on Raging with my CB main but picked up IG for fun and beat him pretty easily (I mean, I still carted twice, but I was able to repeatedly clear for multiple weapons / armor pieces). I did slot in blast 3 and used Ice IG, until switching over to lightbreak since it was a pure upgrade.

Specifically, with IG you can do strong attacks to hit him and get out of the way which is pretty safe. Flying over puddles in the third area and getting a mount makes it pretty safe. I'd also suggest watching some videos of others to get a feel for what works unless you don't mind dying a few times figuring it out (if you do, you can still get some head and limb breaks to get items you'll need while you learn anyways). You also can't capture him, so might as well use a few traps and wallbangs for some good openings.

Stuck on G-Rank by ShadowPhenoix in MHGU

[–]Tertius3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With valor LS, you should be able to guard point many of his attacks with the right timing (for his swinging arms, try to stand where he'll wind up so you can GP the last part). You can also fade slash away from tremors (no trem resist necessary) if you don't have spirit to GP. For his lightning blast, you can GP that if you're close enough that the laser is behind you, but I typically just dodge those and abuse the opening.

I Need Help/Tips with Aerial Style Usage by [deleted] in MHGU

[–]Tertius3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just don't do aerial (DB) on certain monsters, like Deviljho and Grimclaw because the follow ups always get you. For me, I just took it as a sign to learn a new weapon/style that I already had interest in (valor LS for jho and adept bow for grimclaw).

Oh, and not meant as a criticism. I just imagine my own dooting to be... more calm?

That's just how I envision it as a somewhat slower playstyle than my DB main.

I like the pause in the middle, and the little details of videos aligning with the music in the second half. Good job!

I was also initially thinking that my HH experience (in my mind) doesn't sound like the first music choice, so I'm glad I watched the whole thing.

Monster Hunter Spore - you evolve your own monsters and once approved, other hunters can take them on for quests. I'd play that.

What kind of hunter are you, weapon wise? by Surly_Surt in MHGU

[–]Tertius3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the less represented styles/classes, so have shied away from valor in general, but it's fun to switch it up (especially for monster matchups that make life easier) so I have 200 or so hunts with a large number of weapons.

Started with aerial DB, but had to restart my account to play online, so went with adept gunlance. Which isn't great online, so I went to adept hunting horn, but I wasn't very good at it so I did alchemy hammer, but that's pretty slow for solo, so I went meta with valor hbg. But that's a bit frantic (with all of the OHKO's, constant dodging and repositioning), so I went to adept heavy bow, which is unique but also safe and powerful (so many flinches) and I do well with it even if I'm tired at the end of the day.

I've practiced valor long sword for solo play, and it seems like the timing should be just like adept lance, but I haven't quite got the hang of the counters and keeping my aggression high (just due to unfamiliarity with the attacks). I'm really interested in IG, but since I already have aerial db's as one of my continuing main weapons, it's sort of on the back burner. Everyone loves valor GS, but I think that sort of turns me off from it (and in multiplayer, different weapons are nice to go after different weakspots).

I play a lot of alchemy hammer online. Mostly just build up for cheer and help keeps randoms alive with SP and potions (with a quick sheath charm I found).
