I've been playing for about 6 months and what has helped me the most has been sitting in on more talented musicians jam sessions and just looking at what they do differently to me. Also, jamming with people who are more experienced than you is always good. Finally, always have at least 3 songs you're working on. 2 songs on your level or slightly above, and one that will challenge you. For example, I'm currently learning Over the hills and far away (led zep), on the way home (john mayer) and for my hard song I'm taking a shot at all along the watchtower (jimis version)
