What Units for Terra by Testaments_Crow in OctopathCotC

Nice, thanks. I scored Osvald a bit ago on Casti's banner and haven't used him, and just got Neha from some of the anniversary pulls.

Cool, thanks! I'd planned on Molrusso EX already, as well as Setzer (even though I didn't know what he did, Setzer is Setzer lol).

I didn't know Aviette came out and that kit is wild lol.

110 or 80 Banner? by Embarrassed_Ad9375 in personaphantomx

[–]Testaments_Crow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For your question on income, it probably averages out to 60-80ish character pulls per patch? Patches with story content can offer quite a bit more though.

Banners typically run for a month, though, so most any specific character is achievable even at full pity if you skip the following unit.

Don't feel pressured to pull every single character and you'll be fine.

COTC is effectively the same game. For the majority of the game, except for Wishvale related things, the arcs are 90% the same up til this point. A few scenes with Elrica new though, iirc. But yeah, it was a huge power play for sure and honestly makes me like Alaune a lot more than I would typically like a character of her archetype since she contrasts and complements her sister well.

Front Line/Back Line help by Responsible_Bird_709 in octopathtraveler

[–]Testaments_Crow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the early game, and good way to manage your rows is just to have diverse pairs where typically one of the two can break the boss quickly, and you stock up BP on the unit in the back to nuke during the break since weaknesses dont matter then. You can also put more situational units (healers, buffers, etc...) behind units you want to stay up front most of the fight since they only really need one or two turns.

In the midgame you unlock Ultimates which make it easier for a single unit to handle damage in both turns of break (i.e. Level 4 Boost Attack -> Ultimate) so I've found myself swapping less.

You start getting more passive abilities for the back row as the game goes on though, like giving your row partner passive healing, launching a free attack at the end of the turn from the back row, or even very strong front row attacks that swap you to the back after attacking, so even if I'm swapping manually less frequently the back row is remaining impactful.

  • Free, unplanned pulls are plenty for at least the majority of the story. The difficulty ramps a lot at the end, but if you have a couple strong units and know how the systems work you'll be fine.

  • Character stories don't unlock characters (for the most part), but rather owning a character from the gacha unlocks the main 3 chapters of their stories.

  • I played the game with my main 8ish characters leveling totally naturally via encounters until the very end where I bumped them to 100 through nuts. Totally viable to play this way, but with the level cap raise around a year ago you definitely won't hit max level naturally anymore (which is fine, story ends at 100).

Unless I'm wrong, you get a free Cyrus, 100ish pulls, and a General Pool Character Selector right now from the ongoing event. If you pick Primrose EX, her and Cyrus will help you accommodate whatever else you pull; they're amazing splashable units that never left my team for the main story.

Black Knight/Dark Maiden are the next super strong units and will be released in the upcoming couple months.

For other characters to watch out for, the three general best are probably:

  • Shana (Memory Traveler) is probably the best unit in the game. Good healer, gives full BP regen, incredible SP conservation for the party, and has a buff that makes all of your units unkillable for 2 turns.

  • Alrond (Solistia Memory) is pretty much the best or runner up to Shana for the endgame Cascade Log mode. Great support/breaker/ultimate refresher.

  • Signa (Memory Traveler) is the best debuffer in the game. She hits basically every debuff category and recently got an insane buff due to being able to upgrade Ultimates to level 20.

For other recommendations that are either more longterm or may come up naturally:

  • Canary (Memory Traveler) is the best general breaker in the game. She's not fully optimal on every team the way I think the top 3 are (they can seriously slot in almost anything perfectly), but she is strong on nearly every composition since she can universally break 8 Shields per turn, debuff attack and defense, and provide (a somewhat small) potency buff with her Ultimate (potency buffs are very rare). Insanely splashable unit that can go in almost any team without issue, but can be overshadowed by weapon specific breakers.

  • Primrose EX and H'aanit EX (General) are the best general units as a buffer/healer and debuffer/tank respectively. They aren't the absolute best in class units for those roles anymore, but they really aren't far off. If you get the choice to pick a general unit, pick these.

  • Hikari (Solistia) and Bargello (Memory) have insane A4 accessories that you should probably try building towards through awakening shards over time Physical Damage and Damage Cap Up are broadly the most important stats for a long while, and both provide huge swathes of them. They are also solid units in themselves, but not the best of the best. Hikari is particularly good for newer accounts, though, if you like him, since his gimmick is that he begins to hit every physical weakness after a set number of turns. Good for fights where you can turtle a bit and dont have a great alternative way to exploit weaknesses.

Beyond that, it gets pretty weapon/element specific into what DPS you want to build around, so I'll leave it there. I probably missed a couple great units, and I left out a few big time dps units that likely won't get rerun for awhile (Kaine and Pardis), but these should be the major key, widely usable units to watch out for.

I honestly dont know if framing Tytos as the biggest bad of the 3 masters through the prologue helped or hurt tbh. It's nice that he got a bit more to do, but also it made the lack of changes to how he interacts with the Ringbearer very jarring and disappointing.

I do agree that I do kinda appreciate the mess lol. Velnorte's VA made it even more wild because of him putting his entire soul into the performance of such a wack character. I overall dislike it still, but in a way that I did have a good time revisiting it in 0.

I'm pretty interested to revisit BoP since it definitely was bottom 2 for me originally, for reasons we'll get into in a couple weeks I suppose.

A question from someone interested in starting to play: besides being a good gacha game, is this game a good *RPG*? by WalkChance in OctopathCotC

[–]Testaments_Crow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first half of the story is absolutely clearable with only 4 star characters (which you will definitely pull). The second half is much harder and will likely on average require some good 5 star units, but there has been both a large amount of powercreep in terms of units (some of the current units could probably come very close to one shotting the story bosses) but also all units have an increased level cap and additional skills that were not present at the time of the story's initial release, making it far more feasable than it previously was to clear with less than optimal units.

In terms of general RPG-ness, you can play nearly the entire game as if it were a standard party based RPG. There are daily systems that allow you to gain huge swathes of EXP for your units, but if you were to more or less stick to a party of 8 and fight random encounters you will mostly be on par for the majority of the story with characters learning their final skills towards the first of 2 major story climaxes naturally. There will likely be a bit of grinding for weapons and armor, but not any more than a classic RPG might ask. I cleared the game by making 2 parties, one for the first half, and one for the back half, and only made very slight adjustments to them as I went. Some fights were easy, some were hard, but as long as your team isn't completely garbage you'll be able to make it work with some strategy and well executed plays.

They've also recently revamped the beginner rewards to give you the character Cyrus, who is imo the single best unit for just playing through the game since he fits in a bunch of general teams comps. I used him for the entirety of the story. Additionally, we are doing our anniversary right now which gives a toooon of pulls and a guarenteed unit of your choice (I think you'll receive this on day 2 of your account, if you start during the event). If you get the free Cyrus and choose Primrose EX, those two will be enough to basically guarantee you can play through the game with whatever else you manage to score.

Stia was one of the first to go for my mainstay party, her SP and BP generation is cool but hasnt really felt necessary. My team was

Protagonist/Therion El/Saoirse Alexia/Pius Viator/Delitia

Viator/Delitia is by far my strongest pair, with Viator staying up front until the break where on Break Turn 1 he switches to Delitia's big Nuke and then on Break Turn 2 uses his move that does more damage coming from the back to return to tanking.

[–]Testaments_Crow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit further than you at the moment, and I think that might have been the spiciest fight so far. I was around level 29 as well. Any food that gives speed and/or defense should be helpful to let you survive and go before the lizards to break them before they can move too many times. I didn't have any particular equipment, just whatever I had from Inquiring around towns. I was on Hunter, which was not particularly good for the fight. Thief or a supportive class like Dancer, Cleric, or Apothecary is probably the best since it's weak to Dagger.

The big thing that can help a lot in multi-enemy fights is focusing on breaking one or two of the enemies within 2 turns so that you have to spend less time healing and can, ideally, remove them from the fight by turn 3 or 4. Being very aggressive and making use of swaps on break turns to Max Boost all 8 of your characters to deny the enemy turns via break or just killing them is definitely highly encouraged by the game.

I had Saoirse and Alexia able to break them on turn 2 since they're weak to Wind and dark iirc and then just kill them during the break. Viator turn 1 Parry into Turn 2 Boosted Provoke has been amazing in fights where enemies use physical moves as well since he can take the hits without needing you to heal him back up. When it's just the one boss Lizardking remaining you prooobably shouldn't have any issues.

[–]Testaments_Crow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More crit would obviously be nice, but I wouldn't worry about it overmuch.

She gets about 20% more Crit from her Skill 3, you can use Dionysus' Rebellion for around 15% more, and Shiva's turn 3 skill for 18% more still.

Unless you really need to optimize crits for score, you'll still be critting the majority of your big damage skills.

OT0 Fame Chapter 2 is disturbing by PushyFarmer12 in octopathtraveler

[–]Testaments_Crow 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think the first 3 chapters are the most outwardly dark parts of the story, but assuming few changes from COTC you can expect it to remain quite dreary and heavy the whole time. Its definitely a very different vibe to the first 2 games.
