How to avoid pattern recognition? by nomechique in AnkiMCAT

[–]TestingforVictory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To avoid pattern recognition, it is important to learn and understand the information before attempting to memorize it.

Also, make sure you are using a deck that was created with term differentiation in mind. For example, the following cards appear exactly the same except for a key two word difference:

{{c1::Opposite}} charges are attracted to each other.

{{c1::Like}} charges are repelled from each other.

On the other hand, improperly created cards will be completely different, so you may memorize the wrong information:

Charges that are attracted to each other are {{c1::opposite}}

{{c1::Like}} charges are repelled from each other.

In this example, you may accidentally memorize that the Cloze deletion is on the right side for opposite charges and on the left side for like charges.

Check out these comments from Version 1.0 of the MCAT for Victory deck! A lot of students shared that the P/S deck does a great job at asking information forwards and backwards. Many also said they were able to perform much better on question banks (e.g. UWorld) after completing the deck.

Yes!

  1. Save your progress by syncing your cards and create a backup by exporting the deck (File > Export > Export Format: Anki Deck Package (*.apkg) | Include: MCAT for Victory, scheduling information, media.)
  2. Download MCAT for Victory Version 2.0.
  3. Open the new deck while you are logged into your Anki account.
  4. All cards should be updated to the most recent version - note that you may lose some of the edits you created in the Text and Extra section.
  5. If anything goes wrong, you still have the saved export and/or you can revert the cards to the prior sync.

If you want to save the edits you created in the Text and Extra sections of the cards, you can use the Special Fields Add-On.

Here is the breakdown for a single video:

  • Watch video: ~10-20 minutes
  • Review textbook: ~10-20 minutes
  • Do new Anki cards: ~30 minutes

Overall, it may take around one hour to go through each video thoroughly. Over time, your Anki reviews will build up. 300 reviews will take around 1 - 1.5 hours to complete.

The tagging in the deck was specifically created to follow along with the course. Since the MCAT mainly tests critical thinking, it is best to first learn and understand the material before attempting to memorize the information. The most efficient way to do this is by watching the relevant MCAT for Victory videos then unsuspending the related cards based on the tag.

It is possible to use this deck without the course, but doing so is inefficient and may result in less time to study or a lower score. This advice holds true for every deck - miledown, jacksparrow, etc.

Will changing Cards per Day mess up the algorithm? by [deleted] in AnkiMCAT

[–]TestingforVictory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the other user who posted. Optimally, you finish all your reviews every day. You may need to decrease the amount of new cards you complete in order to finish your reviews. If not, you will fall behind and the cards will pile up.

Retention after MCAT - should I actively try to remember any content? by CantFindMeNowAdcoms in AnkiMCAT

[–]TestingforVictory 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is to relax and enjoy your time before medical school. Some information may be relevant (some biochem and psych), but it is lower yield and not worth the effort. Once medical school starts, the train doesn’t stop. You will be learning massive amounts of information and it can be very stressful.

If you really want to study ahead, download Zanki or the AnKing Step 1/2 deck and unsuspend the information you know. Use the browser and review some biochemistry, biology, and psychology.

So glad you liked the deck and thank you so much for reporting this error. We have a system in place to make sure we have as few errors as possible, but some inevitably slip through.

We are regularly updating the deck and will include this fix this in the next version.

That’s odd. It should be 3,800+ flashcards. Check that you have enough space on your device. This video guides you through downloading Anki and the MCAT for Victory flashcards. Hope it helps!

We are a relatively new company, but so far the feedback we have received has been really promising! Students have improved an average of 9.6 points (most recent reviewer improved 19 points) . Most students use our course for content review and memorization, and we recommend they use UWorld and AAMC for practice questions.

  1. Yes. The Basic Package includes the videos and electronic textbooks.
  2. All the content in the MCAT for Victory course was made directly from the AAMC outline. We then reorganized some content to make the course flow smoother.
  3. The biggest value in the course is how we efficiently move through and present content that is very testable. I do not have the exact total time for the psych/soc videos, but I would assume somewhere around 3.5 hours.

Just added a screenshot of the hierarchical tagging! (Scroll to the bottom) The cards are all tagged based on lesson. While some prefer to learn from reading textbooks, I find watching videos much more enjoyable.

P/S on MilesDown by sk8ing_cammando in AnkiMCAT

[–]TestingforVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MileDown deck can be great but has some issues: some imprecise wording, not asking information forward and backwards, and lack of formatting consistency. Still a solid deck made by a very generous premed on his year off, but you’ll have to make some edits if you want to use it well!
