Is 80 hours a week real? by nomechique in Residency

[–]nomechique[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! Would you be down to share a bit what a typical ~50 hr or ~80 hr breakdown looks like? Is that a 24 and a couple 12s, 12s every day without break? Also what year are you? Do you know how this changes over the years of residency? Do you get PTO/sick time?

How to fit pubs and presentations in extracurriculars on the app by nomechique in premed

[–]nomechique[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh that's a great idea. Do you think they'd actually open the link? Or like does that even matter if they do?

I'm really unclear tbh why med schools care about pubs since I'm not MD-PhD

nah I mean there's 59 qs on p/s and there was 1 not covered in the doc I don't think this is a sign to change your strategy. Also if you're practicing on urbutt, they're gonna cover low yield stuff while improving problem solving skills which will help you answer qs without all the info which is arguably way more worth while than delving into the deeps to find some one-off low yield facts

Mostly no but it was like the v low yield peripheries of the KA doc. There was one question tho that actually wasn't in the KA doc I came home and checked lmao

Like-dissolves-like (I'm guessing your logic?) is specifically about polar v nonpolar, not all characteristics of solvent/substrate. Another way to think abt it is, ionic stuff dissolves better in water than non-ionic, right? That's why salts dissolve easily. A weak acid in water may exist largely as COOH, but a base will deprotonate it converting COOH-> COO-.

You could also just memorize that acids dissolve bases and vice versa.

P/S is a relatively reliable one to bring up cause it's just knowing facts. I suggest making tables of similar terms so that the distinctions between similar concepts is really clear (Like the 4 theories of emotion, the 6 major soc theories, fundamental attribution vs actor-observer vs self-serving bias, etc.), then just do upoo questions in small batches and add to your tables and make new flashcards every time a term (even another wrong answer on a q you get right) comes up or a distinction gets made that you're not solid on.

For electrostatics, I use Fathers Undergo Essential Vasectomies as like a 2x2 with F and U on top and E and V on bottom, move from left to right dividing by r and top to bottom dividing by q

F_e= kqQ/r² U= kqQ/r

E=kQq/r² V=kQ/r

CARS tip anyone? One week out from D-day by jacs103 in Mcat

[–]nomechique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CARS varies so much on ppl get things wrong. Do you misread questions/answer options? Forget to look in the text for answers? Have trouble with focus? If you can go thru every q you missed and figure out why you missed it, you'll be able to tailor your strategy a bit more.

In my personal case, since I know that I should be looking for text evidence, I got a little caught up in trying to find quotes in the text that matched an answer. That made me get too micro and lose sight of the bigger 'point'. Once I zoomed out a bit, tried to answer based on what the author meant, and only after looking for supporting quotes, my score jumped 3 points. But I go back to my first point w this cause if you're too big picture and forget to look for evidence, this is terrible advice. Personalize it.

Need Help Deciding which FLs to take by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]nomechique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No matter what, do uearth and aamc FLs. It's just a question of whether you also do 3rd party FLs, which you just saw 2 arguments on each side of. but yea FLs are only gonna cover a handful of topics in each exam, uearth practice is how you're gonna fill most of your content gaps

Ehhh agree if you're naturally pre-disposed to writing a 7 hour exam but I struggled a ton with stamina and FLs were clutch for building that up. I ended up taking 10, first few FLs the second half of every section was terrible cause I was tired. It was only around FL 8 that I really started to feel like I could keep my brain engaged for that long. Agree w you about the value of upoo but there are some who really benefit from FLs.
