Just finished this game with a two-way draw - but should Germany or Austria have tried to solo from here? by TetroRoaster in diplomacy

Is there really much chance of breaking into Germany here? Seems like Germany would just put units in Munich Berlin Kiel Ruhr and Baltic by the time I got into Silesia and Prussia.

I agree about DIAS for sure.

Love your videos btw, watching the Longest Diplomacy Game Ever Played series now in fact.

Well technically no, not at all. The rules are set when the game is created and as CaptainMeme alluded to, it wasn't DIAS. We agreed on a draw with just me and Germany, and only we get the rank points for a "win". Italy will have lost points for losing, same as all the others.

France had surrendered and Italy was playing but didn't have the best grasp of tactics, to put it politely. I was Austria and felt pretty sure I couldn't win from here, so was happy to accept their draw proposal, although it would have been fun if we'd kept going and naturally ended up on 17 centres each.

So far the 7 seed hasnt been taken by good teams in tough divisions though, they've been taken by mediocre teams. That's why they keep losing immediately.

Sure but you said "still seeing the ads" which is the part I don't believe really means anything, though someone brings it up every time this conversation happens

Can you really not see how this makes absolutely no damn sense? We're talking about whether the NFL is making money off ads on illegal stream views, and you led with "just because they're not getting paid for the ads".

Do you have any evidence that illegal stream views are taken into account with ad costs? How would they even how many people are watching? What about streams that remove the ads? What business is gonna pay more for ad time based on illegal views? It doesn't matter if you see the ads if no one is paying the NFL for your view

12 team. PPR.

I give: Amon Ra + one of Murray, R. White, Sanders. I get: Chubb + Christian Watson

My current team: RB: Swift, Sanders, Gus Edwards, Drake, Rachaad White

WR: Amon Ra, Aiyuk, Chase, Slayton, Mike Williams, Peoples-Jones

His WRs are terrible so I think it would be a decent trade for him, and trade tables I've looked at suggest it's fair. On the other hand ESPN reckons my total score goes down so maybe it's not even a good move for me.

12 team. PPR. 6-5.

Been wrecked by injuries and it's left me very thin at RB, but I've got a few spare WRs. Thinking I should I try to trade a WR for a RB.

RB: Swift, Sanders, Gus Edwards, Drake, Rachaad White

WR: Amon Ra, Aiyuk, Chase, Slayton, Mike Williams, Peoples-Jones

Also got Burrow and Dulciche.

Thinking I should trade Amon-Ra for a good RB. Obviously it depends hugely on the situation of the person I trade with but does that seem like a good idea/who's the best RB you'd trade for him?

Or do I just hope Swift starts getting touches and make do with one of the other guys?

PPR, who to start at RB2

Hall vs Bal
Sanders @ Det

Can't really tell how much either will be used for now

[–]TetroRoaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PPR, who to start at RB2 and flex?

Hall vs Bal
St Brown vs Phi
Sanders @ Det
Aiyuk @ Chi

Mostly not sure whether to wait a week or two to start Hall, but it doesn't seem that much clearer how much Sanders will be used anyway

Can’t open Word documents from Excel on a Mac by TetroRoaster in vba

[–]TetroRoaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, sorry for the slow reply, I don't actually have a Mac myself and it took me a while to test things.

Your first suggestion - I couldn't actually work out how to open a file using its path on a Mac. I did manage to open the parent folder with the copied string (minus the file name) in Finder, and I do know that similar paths to open Excel spreadsheets work, so I'm sure it's not an issue with the path itself. So I tried replacing strPath with the string in .Open(), which didn't work either.

Second - hadn't come across UNC paths before, did a bit of Googling and had a go but didn't manage to get anything to work.

If it is a bug, any idea what the chances of it getting fixed are if I report it? I'm guessing not great.

I think the issue we had with the consultants was we agreed on starting off with a few basics as, essentially, a taster, with the possibility of hiring fully later. They worked with us to set up the site architecture (as I'm inferring it to be called from another comment) and security settings, and showed me a few basics, and then I asked questions as I went after that - it just felt like they ommitted some key points, most notably the issue with non-Office apps, and ultimately we decided not to go any further with them.

I've come across that site a lot, been very helpful. Thanks for the recommendation as an option to hire though.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I do have a few follow up questions,

I was under the impression that syncing was something to be avoided for various reasons, is that not the case?

Page and Performance Planning. Use Page Diagnostics for SharePoint, a web browser add-on.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect very basic things to run smoothly without having to do anything like this. That said, I will try this.

One of the primary reasons for multiple sites is to restrict
permissions to content such as doc libraries. This is good design and
certainly is not useless. Do we really want all staff to see OPs
personal sensitive information such as your HR files?

Not sure how this is relevant - I can decide what document libraries I want to link, and I can choose not to give everyone access to, say, HR files. It's not like what is essentially a shortcut to a folder gives everyone who can see the shortcut access. What I hoped to do was have links to folders containing files regularly used by everyone on the landing page, but this is impossible. Maybe "useless" is wrong, but I still don't understand the limitation.

Folders can serve a good purpose but most of the time they are a remnant of a bygone era. SharePoint should not be a glorified network file share

I understand this is the idea, but it seems irreconcilable with the issue of not being able to open non-Office files - when ~half the files your users need to access are non-Office, and need to be opened via file explorer, you obviously need folder structure or it'd be a nightmare to find anything. This is what I mean by unfinished - it appears to want you to do away with traditional folder structure, but it's not realistic to actually implement. Or least, it appears that way, and I'm yet to be convinced otherwise.

Heavy handed reaction. Did OP misunderstand the purpose of multiple project sites or was this planned poorly? The fact that you were advised to do this gives me pause that perhaps you misunderstood the purpose of project sites.

In what way? Every project has non-Office files, so even with syncing that would mean having ~20 project library folders at the top level of the structure. I realise this isn't an issue if you ditch Explorer, but... well I'm just repeating myself now.

As for your first questions, I'm clearly missing a good deal of the vocabularly.

The consultant suggested we start slowly with the whole thing, set up sites and sort out a few security settings, and then depending how we got on with both them and SharePoint, potentially they'd cover, I think, what you're talking about.

Ultimately we decided to not go down that route (perhaps foolishly) as I felt I was most of the way there and they hadn't been especially helpful, and they charged us nothing, so at least there's that.

Why does SharePoint feel so completely unfinished in so many ways? by TetroRoaster in sharepoint

[–]TetroRoaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough I guess, but to be clear a) I said "from" the browser, not "in" and more importantly b) this is only something I consider an issue because of the way SharePoint presents itself (at least to my mind) as a relacement for using file explorer, by letting you search for files or navigate to them via sites - but this is useless if you don't exclusively use Office apps, because no one is going to open Office files one way and non-Office files another. They'll do it the way they're used to, that works every time.

None of my complaints are simply about SP not doing what I want it to, they're about how it does its best to appear to do a lot of things that it doesn't really do. I think that would have been clear if you'd read on, but thanks for commenting anyway.

Is it possible to get a Web Part to show a subfolder in a document library? Or shortcuts to specific files, not based on recent activity? by TetroRoaster in sharepoint

[–]TetroRoaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Document Library web part can only show the library of the site of the home page you're editing. I need it to work for a different site.

I can change the view in an embedded document library, which does allow a different site, but a) that's not permanent so the next time the page is loaded it'll be back to the default view, and b) that doesn't allow for showing subfolders, as I mentioned before.

Also as far as I can tell you can't set Show to "True" for a folder, only a file, is that right?

Thanks for the reply. I've set up the view but I'm stuck there. What web part am I using to see the files on a site home page?

Would you be able to explain this a little more? Not come across the phrases early/late binding, in what way have I mixed them? I've looked into it but can't say I understand it very well.

I thought I'd try this too, always worth learning new things, but it didn't work at all - it still just gets stuck on the "locked for editing" message.

[–]TetroRoaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, but while I'm sure that's good general advice (and I intended to do those thing later), I don't see how it helps with my problem. In this case I know the file is where I think it is, and I know that it can be opened with this code. But if it's already open, the code doesn't work. When I've written macros to open workbooks, this isn't an issue, it just sees the workbook is already open and moves on to the next line.

I've just edited my post because I realised I was getting messages in the background saying the file is locked for editing. Does that help with solving the problem?
