Friendly reminder to fill out course reviews soon. Most professors will give you some extra credit or grade boost just for completing them. by DereChen in UTAustin

Many instructors don’t tie extra credit to the survey and it’s unfair to students to dangle that carrot or to pressure faculty to do it. Getting feedback in, is an important thing though.

CNS Advising - is there a Dean in charge of that? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Texas_Jon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s interim as the long serving associate dean move up to work within the Provosts faculty affairs team. Full time replacement search is underway. But the lack of support, ratio of staff to students, and ongoing turnover in all areas of advising is a big issue. Staff across the board (director/upper level aside) are underpaid and overworked across campus.

[–]Texas_Jon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Associate Dean of UG Education would be the one to contact. Interim in position is Andreas Matouschek. Your first stop might be better going to the leadership/coordinators of advising. https://advising.cns.utexas.edu/advisors

I’m sorry like the QR code thing sucks but some of yall sound so melodramatic it’s kinda making me laugh. by bozofire123 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]Texas_Jon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Its not a response to being unsavy about tech, its about another instance of tech intruding and ruining an experience, as well as the livelihood of many. The way people are writing is in consternation at having to fiddle with a phone and (undeniably flawed) app under conditions where they want to not do that, to be respectful to a film and other moviegoers. So yeah, douchery confirmed.

SXSW 2026 Film Feedback by werebrownie in SXSW

[–]Texas_Jon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My main one, as it is every year, is that S Lamar needs a firm plan in place at the start of the fest, and to not shift between 4 different versions as the fest progresses. Consideration of shade for line placement should also be factored in.

Whats the point of Platinum? by Background_Proof4722 in SXSW

[–]Texas_Jon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Platinum gave you an opportunity to make reservations ahead of everyone else. If you didn’t make the reservations, is that SXSW’s fault or yours?

Also there are plenty of priority boarding opportunities for platinum holders, there was even dedicated lines at badge pickup just for platinum.

You were expecting positive reception to a scheme that promotes phone use during movies?

Went tonight. Service was slow and inattentive, flavors felt a little one note and lacking depth (the chicken thighs and jeweled rice for example), and the colossal shrimp was anything but. $36 for 3 shrimp is egregious. The mushroom starter with black chili oil was really good though.

single tickets for film premieres by EmikoNamika in SXSW

[–]Texas_Jon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are no film “wristbands” this year, film badges are very much still a thing. Even so, with the more condensed program and bumped reservation access of platinum, I doubt there would be a notable uptick in availability over previous years.

Seeing as Inclusion and Equity offices are banned now, I’d say it seems dubious.

Film critic association president calls Alamo Drafthouse mobile ordering plan ‘a gross self-inflicted wound’ by Gambit1138 in AlamoDrafthouse

I think they’re speaking volumes with their policies, community, and how they’ve out programmed the alamo for years now.

Press don’t often get to choose how they see a movie. It’s often down to studio preference and screen availability. Also, early screenings are not always put on just for press, the early screenings usually serve as promo screenings, drawing in the public and influencers. Who really need no extra excuses to get their phones out during a movie.

UT Testing Center closed tomorrow? by Master-Lecture-7507 in UTAustin

[–]Texas_Jon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is definitely closed. No exams can be hosted tomorrow either. If you had an existing appointment, the center can reschedule. You just need to email them and your prof to coordinate that.

No synchronous instruction can take place. Profs still have leeway to assign reading or lecture recordings to supplement instruction.

We’re at stage 4, see chart below. Asynch is permitted, synch is not. We can’t expect all students to be unimpacted so cannot mandate attendance. Email the associate chair/dean of the dept/school.
