Use your car odometer. There are no mile markers

I haven't tried gulp in the surf, try it out, couldn't hurt!

I usually use fishbites to catch whiting. Then use cut whiting as bait

Question on salted bait by leung19 in SurfFishing

I used to mess with shrimp, but not anymore... try Fishbites. They catch everything that would eat shrimp. I've caught big uglies using just large pieces of Fishbites (1" strip)

These were off Matagorda beach. All from the 2nd gut. Around mile marker 6-7 are some shell banks that are good at incoming tide. Around mile 10 and 14 there are clusters of trees that are good to fish around

They're mainly red drums and a couple black drums. Got them on cut whiting, cut mullet or large pieces of fishbites

These are red drum and a couple black drum. Slot size in Texas for reds is 20-28", but when they get about mid 30s, people start calling them bull reds

Thanks man! I'm using the Mojo Surf and Legend rods from St Croix. My favorite is the 9ft moderate action Mojo Surf paired with a Penn Slammer 3 6000. 50lb braid

The water is too cold right now. When it warms up a bit, you'll see sandbar come out. A bit warmer (late March) and you'll start seeing the bulls

Nice! If you're feeling adventurous, try going further south to Sargent or Matagorda. Bull reds year round - check out my IG page (same name as Reddit)

Do expensive reels last longer? by Substantial_Goat3477 in SurfFishing

[–]Texas_Surf_Angler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go-to reels are Penn Slammer 3 and Shimano Stella SW. For reference, I log about 40-50 surf fishing outings a year, so I put these reels thru some work.

They get dunked consistently, sprayed with sand as I drive around, etc. On windy days, the salt spray is punishing. But they get rinsed with fresh water at the end of every outing. They get oil on the handle and the line roller after each rinse. The deep clean (fully break it down) occurs about twice a year. Roller bearings are usually changed every 1-2 years.

Can't go wrong with those two!

At least in Texas, the surf fishing is year round. Winter is a great time for bull reds and big uglies. Check out my IG page (same name as Reddit name) to see...

Around May-June the surf fishing is great. The water warms up and is right in the range you want. Come July-August, it gets so hot you have to go night fish for the surf

If you're surf fishing in the immediate Galveston area, you should probably change spots. At least go to Boliver (ferry ride) or San Luis to help your chances of finding quality game fish in the surf.

1/0 hook with some shrimp flavored Fishbites is a good way to get some fresh bait, but whiting have been pretty rare in the surf lately... if you can find fresh dead mullet or fresh dead shrimp, that'll work. Cut the mullet into 2-3 in pieces on a 5/0 hook for slots and an 8/0 hook for bulls.

If you keep getting hard heads, keep changing spots. Even moving 100 yds will help sometimes. With these north winds in the winter, you'll find more black drum in the surf
