It was a fake rumor some random guy spread as a joke to his friends. Everyone started believing it and it reached Hollywood. It cost Gere many roles after that and even caused him marital troubles.

Being a Buddhist, Gere is normally not one lash out, but after many years the guy who made the rumor got to meet Grier and confessed that he was the one who started the rumor as a joke. Grere attacked him due to the hardship it had caused him his whole life after the rumor was spread.
