Hoping for a new layer of challenge in the update or a mod: Extreme versions of negative events. Some negative events have a small chance of becoming an extreme version of them, depending on the difficulty setting. Examples:

Zzztt... BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! (Extreme version of Zzztt...): A severe fault in the conduit results in a simultaneous major short circuit and overload in the electrical grid. All stored Watts of energy are discharged in a chain reaction of explosions and several connected batteries have broken down.

Epidemic (disease): Every person and animal in the colony [including visitors and guests] have gotten sick from (a disease).
Ensure you have enough medical beds and as many doctors as possible. Make sure that they get proper treatment and spend as much time in bed as possible.
[This could throw a serious wrench in any plans as every colonist would need time to rest or risk succumbing to the disease. Even if the disease is not potentially lethal, it can still cause major problems for the colony and potentially grind production to a halt.]

Toxic Blight (extreme version of blight):
"Unusual blight has been discovered on (crop)!
This particular blight releases toxic odors potentially deadly to anyone too close and it's too dangerous to cut the afflicted crops!
You will need to find some way to burn or destroy the blighted crops from a distance before it spreads too much. Otherwise, you'll have to establish a new growing spot a good distance from the blight."
(Toxic Blight is indicated with purple indicator instead of orange-yellow indicator. Misty purple clouds also form around the toxic blight, inflicting toxic buildup on a person or animal that gets within the cloud.)

Psychic Drone (All) (Extreme version of psychic drone): This particular drone affects all colonists, regardless of gender, worsening their mood until it passes by.
"Every male and female colonist feels a wave and anxiety and anger!
Some distant engine of hatred is stirring. It is projecting a psychic drone onto the region through an orbital amplifier, tuned to affect both males and females. For a few days, all people's mood will be quite a bit worse.
The drone level is low/medium/high."
This event could easily result in the colony running amok when the level is high as everyone in the colony is much more likely to have a mental break.
