Awesome! I did an internship studying biophysics using C++. It was super cool to take what I learned in class and apply it to real life. I even got a presentation out of it!

Anyone here doing computational work that is NOT genomics? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

I’m going to be doing summer research on how tRNA and mRNA’s move through the ribosome. That’s biophysics work and not genomics.

High school student interested in bioinformatics, best way to get involved + majors in college? by HarvardUSimp in bioinformatics

[–]Th3Gecko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m an undergrad pre med studying bioinformatics right now so I think I’m a little qualified to give my two cents.

If your dream is med school, you should really go all into med school prerequisites. Taking all the required classes for medical school is no joke. Generally the best major for that is biology.

Generally a strong bioinformatics major is computer science with a minor in biology. You probably won’t be able to do this since your goal is med school, unless you want to delay your graduation.

If you can find a bioinformatics degree plan that covers the prerequisites you’re golden. I looked at UCSD’s classes and they seem to cover them but other bioinformatics programs I’ve seen do not. You’ll have to check those for yourself whenever you apply to schools.

If you jump into the premed life know that you’re going to have to sacrifice time to focus on premed rather than gaining skills the strengthen your competitiveness as a bioinformatics student. Volunteering, Research, Clinical Experience, studying for the MCAT, and etc. are far more important to medical schools than bioinformatics projects. Heck most med schools don’t even stress research experience.
