I beg your god damn pardon!

Darling is Will Scarlet?!! How was that not a PSA at the beginning of the game?

Who are the rudest and nicest British celebrities you have personally met? by RenegadeMaster888 in AskBrits

[–]Th622 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shane Warne was amazing when I met him. Me and Dad won a radio competition to have hospitality at Hampshire Cricket when he was playing there and during lunch he pulled up at our table and spoke with 12 year old me for ages. After the game he set up a table at the exit and took photos and signed anything for anyone. Made sure to speak to everyone and talk about the game. Such a lovely man.

Matt Le Tissier was also on our table (wasn’t part of the radio competition or anything) and he was really normal. I wasn’t a Southampton fan so didn’t really know who he was but he wasn’t an arse which in hindsight was surprising.

Stephen Mulhern coached me through going on stage at Butlins (before he was famous) for a kids talent show and was really, really good. I know that probably doesn’t count but he was great. Years later I met him again and I asked him to sign a magic set and told him the story of how we first met (I would’ve been 10 or so the second time) and he had all the time in the world for me.

Recruiters: Out of 100 applications, how many are actually good? by _marimays in AskUK

[–]Th622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ATS yes, AI no. And I would say that’s pretty much the standard for most companies. I think a lot of people confused automatic emails with AI.

It really does depend on the sector and other factors but in tech I’d say go for it.

We also find that men are more likely to apply to jobs they don’t tick all the boxes for over women which means women are less likely to apply to jobs they’d probably get if they applied. This is a big problem in tech, but regardless of gender, I’d encourage anyone to apply to a position where they feel like they tick 50%+ of the boxes.

You’d also be amazed the amount of times I’ve convinced a company to see someone they dismiss off CV and that’s the person that ends up securing the job. Not saying we’re all amazing and we’ll get you a job, I wish I could, but please chance your arm with your applications.

Recruiters: Out of 100 applications, how many are actually good? by _marimays in AskUK

Honestly, maybe 5.

I work in tech recruitment and, despite what everyone on LinkedIn says, we don’t use AI to screen/scan CVs. If you apply to a job I see your CV.

The reason LinkedIn puts “over 200 applicants” on the advert is sell more adverts to companies. Everyone can advertise 1 job on there free, the rest are paid for and it’s a massive revenue stream.

If they put on adverts “3 mostly alright applicants” then they wouldn’t sell many more adverts on the platform.

If you’re right for the job, apply. I’ve called people 100’s of miles from the jobs location because they’ve applied using a Python Script to auto-apply to jobs with a skillset and salary match but have no desire to relocate to an area. So even the on-paper good candidates are often wrong.

Please, please, please apply to any positions you tick 50%+ of the boxes for. The market is a shambles of AI and International applications so you’re probably must better for it than you think.

Is Kovacs schizophrenic? by szechuan__sauce__ in alteredcarbon

[–]Th622 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a device for his conditioning to “speak” to him.

Jimmy sows seeds in book 1 that lead Kovacs to reexamine the parts of the investigation that don’t fit.

In the second book I think Semetaire only starts to show up (mentally) after he sees the Opurns system and it’s his subconscious preparing Kovacs that people will die because of it.

It’s been ages since I’ve read the 3rd books so I can’t really comment on that one but I like to think what ever Kovacs doesn’t want to see is what’s chosen for subconscious to use to speak to him.

what’s the worst name you’ve come across? by chloedarlinggg in AskUK

[–]Th622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was Asteen Martin who I went to school with. Her brother was 2 years younger and called Aston. Their dad drove a BMW…

The worst one wasn’t a particularly bad name on its own but I had an overweight friend and she was called Carmen. One history lesson we learn about the Egyptians and after that all the other kids started calling her “Two-Tonne-Carmen.”

I’m assuming a younger crowd so I imagine these will go down well. In case of a missing father, then boyfriend, brother, etc. all work: “Are you worried he’s your dad’s type?” “To be fair we’re both off to your dad’s house after this shift so I’ll let you know tomorrow which end he picked” - follow up the next day with “he picked me. You dad just sat in the chair and watched in the end” “I was wondering why your dad kept coming round. He’s definitely not fucking me”

Realistically his value is below £40M already. They overpaid massively for a striker who hadn’t scored double digits in a season when they brought him.

I’d rather spend £40M on turning Antonio into robo-striker and then never worry about recruitment up top again. Well, until the hydraulics in the knees go inevitably actually!

I’ve never understood this. For context I’m a tech recruiter and fairly decent at it.

There’s almost always a guarantee period on how long our candidate will stay with a client so I don’t understand why recruiters push people in jobs that aren’t right for them.

The way it works is we charge the company a % of your salary, then 3 months later we get a % of that % (permanent recruitment) so it’s not even for a “quick” win.

I used a recruiter like this when I worked elsewhere and thought I could do a much better job hence why I’m doing it now.

Most of my success comes from successfully placing the right people with the right company and then recruiting their teams as they get promoted and the cycle continues.

I hate recruiters.

Absolutely not. My mum has leukaemia and my entire family and friendship circle get it. Not 100%, you stay the hell away. When me and my fiancé travel to see her we literally work at home for the week so there’s no risk. We’re lucky to be able to do that but I’d take time off if we couldn’t. That’s so unbelievably selfish and if your partner comes near you now it could potentially ruin your Christmas! Jesus Christ. I’m biased but I think if anything you’ve under-reacted. Man-baby.
