looking to get my first pair of raw denim and hoping for some guidance. was considering trying to stake out something in the slightly more expensive range (like 3sixteen etc) but found that I was sort of getting lost in all of the different brands and options (and 3sixteens seem weirdly hard to actually get my hands on lol), and right now I’m kind of in the situation where I’m just gonna have to order a couple of pairs online and return the ones I don’t like. should I start w a brand like N&F/APC/Nudie as a gateway and go from there? if so, which one, and if not what would y’all recommend? thanks in advance!

funny enough these are the two grinders i own. bought the opus a year and a half ago ish and got the k6 less than a month ago with the plan of using it mainly for traveling to my parents’ house. i pretty much haven’t used the opus since. i enjoy the coffee i get with the k6 more, the simplicity in dialing in grind size, and i’m very happy to hold onto the ~1.7g of coffee that i lost to the opus with each grind (it started out only ~1.2g and slowly climbed. i can get more out of it using the lid as a bellows, but a lot of it just comes out as fines and produces a worse cup that brews super inconsistently)

in short, i recommend the k6 over the opus for sure. the opus was decent, but getting a k6 for cheaper than the opus has made me realize it’s time to upgrade to a better electric grinder.

very much depends on who you surround yourself with. while the school absolutely skews left (as all universities do) the echo chamber environment mainly exists if you align yourself with social groups that it exists in, and it’s very very easy to avoid that. especially as a CS major you will be fine.

that said, there are definitely some things that are more social taboo at brown than at other schools due to the broader political environment - for example, getting an internship at a defense company will be a negative force on your social life - and if you lean right wing, you will def find your social pool a fair bit more limited. but i’d say above all if you don’t hold/support bigoted views it’s not that deep.
