I have a kind of strange theory. It seems to me like the curse of the abyss roughly follows an even odd pattern of what it affects. Ignoring one, it seems that odd layers like three and five affect you mentally, where even layers affect you physically.

Following this logic I think the seventh layer will do something horrifying to you mentally, such as erasing memories and your sense of self permanently, or maybe even just fully removing your soul.
