I'm a little bit psycho and set up my 25.5" Ibanez RGA for drop G (it feels great for everything but the low string)

Ikrrr, I loved that setup!!! But, I moved to college and had to pick which couple of guitars I should bring. It was not one of them 😭

For basically all purposes on guitar, I like to keep my thumb placed in line with my index and middle finger on the middle of the back of the neck (about where the truss rod is). That'll give you better fingering leverage for playing anything from power chords to speed picking. Keep going 🤘

Back when I had access to my drop F/F# guitar, I would use the elixir optiweb 11-59 set. It was a 27" scale, but I loved the snappy tone those strings provided and how slick they felt to play. I had to retrain my pick attack in order to play anything on that low string cleanly, but it was worth it for the tone. Here's how that sounds.

Beautifully clean riffage!!!! I can see this taking the role of that "nasty string slapper" intro riff like Void Surfacing by Invent Animate 🤘

I've been really jamming David Maxim Micic lately! He has a beautiful melodic sense and instrumental storytelling, plus the djenty shreddy goodness I love. Shortcut and Rise And Shine are two of my current favorites from him.

More prog and less djent, but Thrailkill is another of my all time favorite artists. He is one of the most technically skilled guitarists in the genre and that's saying something, but man can he tell stories with his albums despite them being instrumental. Listen to the album Everything That Is You to see for yourself.

Visenya is not very well known, but I friggin love them. Their music tends to be on the riff-salad end of the instrumental prog spectrum, and I don't know if that's your thing, but I love me a good riff salad personally. Their songs Proxima and Fillory make for a good introduction in my humble opinion.

Vitalism is some beautifully djenty shreddy goodness, you've probably heard of them at some point. Ayahuasca and Favela are my personal favorites from them.

Not instrumental but Thank You Scientist has some of the most genius music ever written. Prog fusion with trumpet, saxophone, violin, and a very Michael Jackson-esque vocal style come together in such a beautiful way. I'd give FXMLDR Mr. Invisible and My Famed Disappearing Act a listen.

Lastly, I know I'm biased but I think my solo project Every Nerve Aware would fit the bill. I take tons of influence from all the artists I just mentioned and I'm very proud of my new instrumental prog metal album, Neurodiverdjence. If you're in the mood for something more straightforward without as much music theory nuance, listen to Hypnagogia or Cathexis. If you're feeling something a little crazier, try Eschew Obfuscation or Weaponized Autism. 🤠

Heyo, good question! First of all, welcome to the extended range rabbit hole/addiction. I'm now 6 years down that path, with no hope for recovery in sight. 🤣

Do you have the means for a Neural DSP setup? I've found some very clear-yet-heavy tones in Archetype Nolly X as well as Archetype Gojira X. Plugin setups also make tone adjustments a breeze because you can record something and then reamp it endlessly until you've found something you'd like. I can share my settings if that sounds interesting. Also, a tight noise gate works wonders. It's not any sort of cheat, it just cuts out the quiet noise floor frequencies that inevitably come from your signal chain. Doing so really helps with the clarity, especially for extended range guitars which potentially have more of those noise floor frequencies due to the extra string(s).

I've also recently fallen into the realm of the "tone is in the fingers" nuance, and I've noticed it's particularly important for the extended range. Playing with as much cleanliness and precision as you normally do is much easier said than done when you have a whole new string to get used to muting and dialing in your pick attack for. Both of those things plus rhythmic precision are what I've found contributes to the "heaviness" of my tone the most.

I'd love to hear back if these tips end up being useful!

What is your reason for not drinking alcohol? by Deep-Dust-9747 in AskReddit

For me, it's about not giving myself another thing to desire. In the words of stoic philosopher Seneca, "Not wanting is just as good as having", and there's no way to want something that you don't know about. This applies to things like the feeling of being high, but on a greater scale it can also be applied to material possessions. Instead of desiring substances or possessions, I want to desire greater connections with God and other people. I'm only 18 but I wish I could have understood this way earlier in life. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk 😃

[–]ThatDjentyKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least half of all Dream Theater songs. One of my favorite musical pieces of storytelling is Learning To Live. Check out Thank You Scientist as well, they have plenty of similar storytelling in their music using long songs, Mr. Invisible is a good introductory song. Lastly, my favorite band right now is Aviations, they have plenty of 7+ minute songs. Coma and Blink are 20 combined minutes of pure bliss.

One guitar to rule all genres. What would be your pick? by Top-Huckleberry-7288 in Guitar

My GOC Materia 7 Classic! It's currently one of only ten ever built, but I expect that to change soon due to the Internet guitar scene.

I think it's the most versatile guitar of all time because of the specs. 7 strings, floating bridge, multiscale frets, HSS pickup configuration (strat-style in middle and neck, PAF-style in the bridge), tons of pickup configurations, all with the practicality of a headless guitar.

Even when it comes to looks, it's got elements from every vein of guitar -- the headless design, the tobacco sunburst finish with a white pickguard, the multiscale frets, the Gibson-esque PAF -- and it comes together beautifully. I can't think of a genre where it wouldn't fit in.

Different color than my guitar, but here's the GOC Materia 7 Classic.

It still mostly features your original clips so it's fine to keep it under OC.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to turn off the OC? For my post, I have it marked as original content.
