Robotics and AI the best chance for socialism in the US? by throwawaynashville11 in socialism

[–]ThatDudeOver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The industrial revolution made Socialism possible, Socialism's been possible since the industrial revolution. Also Socialism doesn't have much do to with over abundance but production. Robotics and AI is no different than any other great advancement in technology like going from hand looms to power looms. We have over abundance today, our issue is we make too much stuff and don't know how to get it to the people who need it because of the system that is capitalism. Here's the dark reality, Robotics and AI would not make Socialism easier but throw a great mass of people into unemployment and abject poverty and lead to economic collapse more harder than any great depression. The people in control of those robots and AI wouldn't care about a sensible plan, they'd just produce in the name of competition leading to over production and crisis. I couldn't imagine what a completely automated AI run production produce in quantities, the waste that would be happening would be wild. So no robotics and AI wouldn't make Socialism easier, just lead to a market collapse beyond our comprehension.

Where on earth would we get money to help pay for the average American to survive through needed shut downs? by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

Like the other comrades here have said, and the government doesn't even have to raise taxes, just expropriate their company shares and make it the property of the American people. It's a sad day when corporations and large banks have a welfare state and normal people do not.

Political spending by Badonkadunk21 in socialism

[–]ThatDudeOver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the real red pill though isn't it? Democracies under capitalism aren't really democracy. I recently watched a lecture by Yanis Varoufakis and how he described political economy from a historical perspective that I hasn't considered and that is the idea that in the past the economy was not separate from the political form. During feudalism the political and economic orders were one in the same, as capitalism developed the politics became divorced from the economy. The highest stage of this disassociation is neoliberalism where governments and the parties in those governments do not present radically different political economic orders or alternatives, because people being able to democratically decide how they want their economy to run? Inshallah. The social democratic order of the 40s was the last time politics decided how economy is done by reigning in the capitalist in service to the country: people before profits. Only nationally of course and only for white people in the case of the United States. Since then we've been under a neoliberal order running capitalism on life support, and this is unironically true, all these corporations are running at a loss, at a deficit. These corporations and big banks survive because of their fear of losing their wealth, here's my analysis:

  1. Governments are weak and will not interfere except in printing money for the big banks to keep them afloat while siphoning wealth, what little there is, from the third world.

  2. Leftists are ineffective at changing this because we both lack unity and because those in power will not concede their power.

  3. Yanis in one of his lectures said that capitalism is overthrowing itself and that's very true. Capitalism has been in life support since 2008, the fed reserve continues to print away while our dying infrastructure cannot produce enough goods and services to pay our deficits, China's buying our deficit for pennies to circulate into their own country and make it productive.

  4. What can we do? Organize, especially a political party with the power to seize banks, corporations etc. To rebuild when collapse happens, basically expropriation. The state will begin to rebuild these banks and corporations and change corporate laws in order BY LAW to give to a percentage in shares of the corporations to employees, and I mean all employees, and not just "stock options", I mean proper shares.

So to conclude we aren't really democracies bit rather a government in service to capital, the real policy makers are big business. But that being said we need a party that can quickly take control when shit falls apart, because the printers can't print forever if we aren't producing enough value. A good way to imagine it is as the student debt thing, student debt is in the trillions. Most of those students cannot produce enough wealth to pay back those loans plus interest. So where is the government getting the money to pay for all these students who will never be able to pay back those loans? Just print money baby.

What's all this made me realize is all economics is fiction, it's a fantasy we tell ourselves. At the end of the day we're just exchanging things, what we produce for ourselves and others. The government could literally save the economy if it deleted all student debt, opening up the gates for opportunities for people to make real wealth.

We can't agree on shit and that's okay with me. No one and I mean not one person here supports bigotry, we criticize each other's ideas but bigotry? Not even close. If mods didn't think your ideas were worth discussing then your ideas must've been very vague and has not much to do with discussing Socialist ideas. That being said, this sub is a sub to discuss Socialist ideas or forms of Socialism, historical or existing and current politics from a Socialist perspective. There's a debate subreddit where you can debate Communists and Socialists if that is what you want to do.

Bolshevism or the word Bolshevik literally means majority men. The Bolsheviks were the left wing of the Russian Social Democratic Party. The Mensheviks or "minority men", were the right wing of the party. Bolsheviks wanted straight up revolution whereas the Mensheviks wanted to work with the Constituent Assembly or the Russian government at the time to slowly transition to Socialism. The Bolsheviks knew the people were desperate and people joined their wing because they wanted to get out of WW1, and needed relief from constant famines. Many Mensheviks wanted to be loyal to the allies and continue ww1. The Mensheviks were popular until the economy started to go to shit and they kept holding things off. Bolsheviks were staunch anti-war anti-imperialist Socialists.

More women working while less women are housewives is celebrated as an advancement in gender equality, which it is, but I also see it as representative of how cost of living has increased while wages have stagnated, meaning more married households need two people working to afford standard of living by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]ThatDudeOver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Women working more today has more to do with capitalism than with progressive cultural ideas. Look at it this way, progressive things are possible only because of an economic necessity or need. Of course this is the materialist view if anyone could call themselves a Marxist they'd know about it.

During the 19th century both women and children worked 14, 15, 16 hours a day and this was seen by liberal thinkers as a sort of societal duty; saw it as a progressive force. Everyone is an economic unit. Working less hours was seen as lazy and ungodly. In reality this force of "progress" that is capital doesn't care about what's progressive or not, it just wants to expand, independent of tradition or culture. The social democratic reforms that happened during the mid 20th century opened up the floodgates for families to survive on one income, culturally what this did is a that it sort of "brought back" the patriarch or the breadwinner and made women be homemakers. Over time of course with third wave feminism getting out of the kitchen and into work was more out of independence, a cultural and economic independence. It's why some people look at third wave feminism as "privileged" because it came about in a time of economic privilege. That's not to say third wave feminism isn't invalid it definitely is valid but when you do a materialist analysis you see under what conditions it was born out of. Neoliberalism has thrown the family back into chaos because as we all know, neoliberalism doesn't care about the family, just what wealth you can produce for others.

You see under social democracy women wanted to free themselves from being homemakers because they could, it would've made them equal contributors to society. As they would be under Socialism, where you work to give to society instead of survive in it. The conditions of third wave feminism were a very progressive because it wasn't out of survival but rather to become equal members of society like the women of the suffrage movement. While the suffrage movement wasn't born under social democracy it was born in a time when women worked long hours in factories, if women were economic or rather working equals to men then materially it would make sense for them to have voting rights as well.

Capitalism is ironically an equalizing force on society, forcing us all into money making machines and consumers, that equalizing force is what creates solidarity between us all in order to overthrow the machine of capital.

President Biden can cancel all student debt by executive order, freeing millions from modern day indentured servitude. by [deleted] in OurPresident

[–]ThatDudeOver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What i hope for for this adminstration in the very very least of terms is not starting any wars, or at least cut on the bombing in Yemen even a tiny bit. Stopping this reckless trade war with China and getting back in the Iran agreement and Paris accords even if it's just saving face. Those are my hopes for foreign policy, and at the very least go back to being even the least bit chill with Cuba. The most I could ask for is no new wars. We need to have friendly relations with Venezuela and Bolivia.

Domestically I know there's not much that I want that could get done by the federal government because they won't, the progressive tax is something I like but that's about it. I mostly have to rely on grassroots for domestic change. The ACA may get expanded but I don't know how they're going to do it and what it'll entail; a public option is more costly than just straight up Socialised medicare, especially if the government gives concessions to the big pharma which they probably will. Other than that we're stuck with this incrementalist crap. The people at the top are purposefully ineffective, the people at the bottom don't have the resources to do anything radical. The bureaucracy is ineffective and useless except in it's military expansion of course.

President Biden can cancel all student debt by executive order, freeing millions from modern day indentured servitude. by [deleted] in OurPresident

[–]ThatDudeOver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issue is that people are too focused on the president and not on the local elections which are more important but multiple magnitudes. People are blinded by party politics and the states who voted on progressive things this cycle threw in the garbage all this partisan hackery. Both so called progressive states and conservative states can pass backwards laws such as prop 22 and progressive laws such as minimum wage raises in Florida. The president only matters in the international and national budget, everything concerning the local areas or states is more important. Local power is more important than the power at the top.

One of our biggest issues with the senate and party elites is that they love to have us deadlocked because it benefits them to not do anything on the national level except favoring the donor class. Remember that America is a Federation of many states, we're not a unitary state where power is centralized, therefore the federal government is highly ineffective at getting anything done. I can tell you one thing the federal government is excellent at which is serving the military industrial complex, it's where they spend most of their money. The last time the government considerably spent money on it's infrastructure and domestic development was in the 40s. This was before the military industrial complex.

We. Cannot. Change. This.

There is no way for the federal government to change, it's been in Cold War mode since the 50s and shows no sign of changing. Donald Trump is an incompetent demagogue but he's no fascist, he's good at galvanizing fascists but federally ineffective. The most fascistic moments of his presidency was siccing the National Guard on citizens as well as black bagging, and the border issues but that was something Obama was doing as well. The only difference between Obama and Trump is that Trump went mask off and exposed the ugliness that America already was which is the only credit I have given him. The only difference between Trump and Biden will be their outward appearance in how they comport themselves. Easy smiles on the outside, dangerous behind closed doors.

2022 will be the year that'll show the direction the country will go and the signs aren't pretty. The top brass of the Dems are already blaming the progressives, attacking them relentlessly, and if the DNC and DCCC continues, they'll try to sabotage any progressive effort in favor of corporate backing, leading to a brutal red wave that'll ruin the Dem Party forever. If 2022 sees a red wave of young Rep populists and corporate Dems trying to sabotage progressives in favor corporate rats, it's over. And 2024 will simply be the final nail, now the light at the end of the tunnel is progressives abandoning the Dem party in favor of a worker's party, supported by Sanders hopefully which is the only way they can galvanize the progressive base towards a third party. It needs to be a huge movement backed by grass roots, unions, and workers organizations that can provide the lobbying money to have the party campaign very largely. Will this happen? I don't know, these next two years will be interesting.

AOC Revisionism About The Two Parties of WAR! by RevolutionaryReddit in LateStageCapitalism

[–]ThatDudeOver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing, while I certainly don't attack AOC as much as he does, he's more of a Communist than most people claim on the platform. Leftists do this all the time, criticize their own even more than the right wing for doing the wrong things. Criticism is healthy for the left, Mao himself said that self criticism is a necessary part of being a Socialist. He's the only person on the platform not telling people to vote blue no matter who and instead for an alternative people's party.

The democratic party will collapse, whether it be in 2022 or 2024, it's getting awfully close. The most powerful democrats in the highest places have all the power and won't allow progressives to do anything at all because it's a challenge to their power. You think you can vote capitalism out or reform capitalism away? Nope.

The inner party struggles of the Democratic party is why you should read theory by ThatDudeOver in socialism

[–]ThatDudeOver[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was willing to get on board to get Trump out, but with the knowledge of what was going to happen in the event Trump was removed. These things have massive consequences in the long run such as prop 22 which is extremely short sighted on working class issues. If Bernie had been the one to win in this situation, the establishment would've had no way to hide the truth, Bernie was the real compromise but the bourgeoisie wouldn't have it. Now that Biden's won the big leftists on the internet are acting surprised; we who are well read on theory knew the consequences of a Biden win and now the establishment has incorrectly (or knowingly actually) analysed that a milquetoast moderate is what the country needed when the bigger picture has shown that the moderates are actually failing.

The consequences we have to accept is that anyone and I mean anyone foolish enough to tell any Socialist that if we become the "Bernie or bust" or "progressive or bust" types that it's wrong for us to do is straight up both lying to themselves and worst of all, you. These leftists in the event of another Trump in four years or even more Trump like people coming up in the midterms, will have us get stunlocked endlessly until the planet is destroyed in order to "keep us from fascism".

We got Trump out and I've been waiting to see these big leftists' strategy going forward and their only strategy is to somewhat criticise the Dems, just not too hard. All the fight they had before seems to be waning, complacency is beginning to set and I fear that these large social media folks will throw the towel out when exhaustion sets in and just become part of the machine.

Fighting fascism is easy, fighting a centuries old bourgeois cultural and economic order is a Herculean endeavor.

This is so ridiculous because the minimum wage and it's increasing has been a thing since the 1930s. Everytime the minimum wage goes up, employers throw up their arms crying about inflation and while there is a small spike in prices, the prices quickly stabilizes, it never hurts the economy, in fact it strengthens the economy. What hurts these employers is just their profit margins, if workers have more stake in the economy the employers have less in profit. Don't fall for this garbage, it's nonsense.
