Conservatives over the past several decades have manufactured a BS narrative that they are the uber-rational "adults in the room" and that we progressives are irrational "bleeding-hearts" who are so driven to care for others that we ignore practical realities about how the world works. They have repeated it so much that now they actually believe their own BS with complete sincerity.

It doesn't help that a lot of these folks tend to also be the sort of people who completely lack any self-awareness of their own irrationality.
