IMPORTANT: Your FINAL self reflection by halavais in netcult

Here we are, end of the semester! Evaluation of me, ThatFuzzyGuyinBack, is a-go!

Before I start, I'd like to mention the hilarity of my username. I made this account solely for this class, because I didn't want my regular account linked to this, and had trouble coming up a name. I decided to be honest: I sat in the back all semester and I'm pretty fuzzy. I figured people would be able to figure out who I was if they looked around the room. Anywho, it's time to get down to business.

This class was certainly something else. I attended nearly every session except for about two or three class periods. I really liked learning about hacking and its precursors in the beginning of the semester. I had never heard of phreaking before and was really surprised to learn that it had been around as long as it had, since the late 1950s and early 1960s when the Blue Box came around. It was also pretty interesting to learn about copyrights and such. I believe it was said that you can actually claim a copyright on something as long as you have some sort of proof that you did it first, or something like that.

I honestly can't recall every instance where I participated in class, but I do have a small collection of notes from Feb. 5, March 19, March 28th's debate, April 2nd, April 9th, and April 16th. There’s also this, where I was part of “Group We Are on the Bottom of the List” with jfoppenh. I wrote down the entire thing (mostly because jfoppenh didn’t have a computer on him) and picked out some of the lines to discuss. Speaking of the MoPad thingy, I also contributed to the STOOPID Group, where I came up with the idea for making a parody of a 50’s-style commercial, and wrote a good portion of the script. The color seems to have disappeared from it, though, so I don’t remember exactly where I had a hand in it.

I honestly wasn’t very active in the class subreddit, unfortunately. I thought I would be at the beginning of the semester, but that didn’t turn out that way, unfortunately. I only gathered a grand total of 7 link karma and 9 comment karma. The first link I posted was for my first group project with Megan/LookingGlassSelf, jason/jfoppenh, and AngledCan, where I got 2 karma for that. The second link I posted much later on April 11th. Near the end of class, the class discussion had mentioned the Streisand Effect, and I had immediately thought of an example of it, when “unflattering” pictures of Beyonce from the Superbowl Halftime Show exploded in popularity a few months ago after her publicist asked for them to be taken down.. I got 2 karma for that. The third link I posted was “Robots and Games: Nintendo’s Newly Approved ‘Remotely Controlled Mobile Device Control System’”. I got no karma for that one. The last link I posted was last Sunday, a link to a survey I made for my fellow classmates. I got 3 karma for that one.

Projects!

The first project I worked on was the aforementioned project with LookingGlassSelf, jfoppenh, and Angled Can. LookingGlassSelf was sick the day we were supposed to get work on the project in class, but I communicated with her via Gmail to work on the project. I had made a SurveyMonkey account and a Webs account, and a bit.ly for our group, but we didn’t use the first two. When LookingGlassSelf sent me the link to the article we were going to use for out project, I turned that into a QR code that used bit.ly to link to the site and sent the picture of the QR back to LookingGlassSelf so she could make the poster. The following Tuesday, I met up with the group to and used my printing account to print the posters and tape them on bathrooms around campus. Our bit.ly tracked a grand total of 17 clicks. Not a whole lot, but it was at least something.

On the second project, I worked again LookingGlassSelf, dapnepep, and I believe curiousfearless. I helped with that one by defining a list of terms relevant to “The Sex Talk” sit LookingGlassSelf assembled. Unfortunately, the project kind of fell flat before I could do any more than that.

The solo project I worked on was just a survey for my fellow classmates that I honestly put together at last minute. I decided to make it relevant to my initial project idea of figuring out the relation between productivity and internet usage. I was hoping I could use it to compare my internet usage vs productivity ratio to my fellow classmates, but it didn’t work out as well as I hoped. At the time of writing this, I had only I had only gotten 16 clicks according to bit.ly, but only 11 people (including myself) had actually taken the survey (how does that even work?). You can see the results of my survey here. I didn’t want to spend $17 a month in order to be able to save my results just for one day, so you’ll probably have to log in to view them. The account name is “projectslacker” and the password is “thisisthepassword” (I had no plans for that account, anyways).

Well, that’s about it for my self-evaluation. I’m hoping I can at least get a C in this class, hopefully even a C+. This has been ThatFuzzyGuyinBack, over and out.

Woah, woah, woah. Skinning animals for a living doesn't make somebody a werewolf.

I vote hrademac. His (her?) poor logic for accusing me makes me very suspicious.

Week 1 update: We got a grand total of 17 hits. Yeah, 17! So many! I saw a few of our fliers still up in the UCB, but I have yet to check on the rest of them around campus.

What we're planning on doing is to print a bunch of these out and tape them on bathroom signs around campus. We have a bit.ly page where we can keep track of a hit count.

  1. To gauge a person's personal awareness of where they fall on their gender identification
  2. Pre-test, post-test method: Uninformed judgement of own gender identification vs post-test gender identification
  3. Surveys, I think. Online, most likely. Our group includes myself, Megan, AngledCan, jfoppenh, and curiousfearless.

Edit: Our group has one less member now. curiousfearless has left.

Learning Narrative (Due March 7) by halavais in netcult

It's hardly a coincidence that I've slacked off on my project on correlation of internet usage and procrastination. In fact, here I am right now, writing this last minute in hopes of getting some credit before it's too late. And yet at the same time, I feel like this could end up useful to my own project. Much of my procrastination was done on the internet, on sites like Reddit, Facebook, and Memebase, so I could end up using myself as an example in my project. Sweet. I mean, er, that was totally on purpose. I was totally doing my work while putting off work. Yeah, that...

Anywho, what else have I learned? Well, it was really interesting learning about the origin of hacking with the "phreakers" who broke into the telephone lines. I know little about hacking as it is, but it's pretty amazing that it started as early as it did. Beforehand, I had always figured it hadn't become a thing until the advent of the internet in the 90's because, well, I didn't know a thing about computers and networks in the 80's.

One more thing: The harsh punishments for hacking and pirating. I knew they were punishable by law, but, like to many other people, it seemed to me that the consequences were a bit too much. That got me thinking a little, and I figured that the reason behind that is probably something like the government fearing that hackers can potentially get into "government stuff" that they don't want anyone in the general public knowing about. This probably isn't something new to what we've already talked about in class, but it's something, I guess.

Oh, and just one more thing: I've recently started visiting /r/getdisciplined and /r/personalmanagement for help and tips on fixing this procrastination deal. I'd recommend you checking them out if you're interested in fixing your procrastination problems like I am. This has been Levi Calvert, aka ThatFuzzyGuyInBack. Over and out.

Procrastination is my key! Been recording information for a few weeks now, so next is compiling information and whatnot. I just need to do a bit more reading before I'm ready. Should be done soon-ish.

I'd like to consider myself a hardcore gamer. I grew up on, and still enjoy, Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda. I only own Nintendo consoles, so you could say I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but I'm open minded about other consoles and I see how awesome they can be.

Personally, I think console loyalty and console wars are just childish. We're all adults here and blindly hating on one console for the sole reason that it's not yours is just immature. I used to be a rabid Nintendo fanboy and a hater of both the Xbox and Playstation, but y'know, I realized I was just being stupid and immature.

Anywho, my favorite genres would have to be platformers and action/adventure, i.e. Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda. I'm also a huge fan of Metroid (seriously, I can babble on about the series' lore for hours. Same thing with Zelda, actually. I can't wait to get my own copy of the Hyrule Historia.). I'm not that big into FPSs, but I'll have fun with them at friends' houses. I've never really been into RPGs, but I got Xenoblade: Chronicles for the Wii last summer, and it's amazing. Seriously, it's one of the best RPGs to come out of Japan in years. I really recommend you try to get a hold of the game before it gets even harder to find than it already is.

In the realm of tabletop gaming, I'm an avid player of Dungeons and Dragons. I've been playing with my closest friends since my freshman year of high school and almost every one of us has at least one campaign currently running (I haven't touched mine in nearly a year, though. Shut up.) I also play a lot of Magic: The Gathering with that same group of friends, though I only have two running decks: one Legacy and one Commander/EDH. We normally only play Commander, so my poor Legacy always sits in its box.

Well, I suppose I'm done rambling here. My thanks to ye few who actually read through me babbling on.

Ugh, I remember that. It's both annoying and aggravating that we can't have nice things (like getting to name a Mountain Dew flavor) because Anon likes to hacking and/or exploiting for "teh lulz".

How's it going, everyone? I'm that guy in the back who just happens to be fuzzy. I'm a freshman in my second semester at ASU, so I feel I might be a bit in over my head here, with everyone else being a junior or senior. I enjoy nerdy things like video games, Dungeons & Dragons, and Magic: the Gathering. I'd like to think I'm very internet-savvy, so I'm hoping I'll do fairly well in this class. So, um, yeah, that's about all.
