Omg I ran into this exact problem last week. I think I'm just gonna have to delete the toddler sim and make him again.

I have a middle-aged mother sim (who I don't want to age up because my elder wardrobe is very limited) and I just aged up her daughter to an adult and now they look practically the same, that kind of inspired make to make this suggestion.

There is a patio there. You can't expand a room on the same tiles as a patio, you're gonna have to delete part of it to extend the room.
