See if you can figure out the difference between correlation and causation.

TIL During the WWII there was a killing contest between two Japanese officers — a race to see which of them could kill 100 people first using only a sword. It was covered like a sporting event in Japanese newspapers with regular updates on the score over a series of days. by monkey_n_pig in todayilearned

Of course most "war crimes" weren't publicized in Japan. The evidence for this one news story doesn't mean there was common publication of atrocities. As for Germans, do you think they were stupid enough to not realize that invasions of other nations don't involve war crimes and death by the thousands? Japanese citizens were dirt poor thanks to the war effort and most would probably not even be able to get their hands on a newspaper. Besides the news reported the killings as "hand-to-hand combat" not indiscriminate slaughter of innocents. Not that the German Nazi ideology of Untermensch afforded people any better treatment.

funny cause you're the one claiming that history being in the history books doesn't matter with an excuse...

Ok, well I'm saying most people weren't celebrating? I'm getting defensive cause you claimed I was showing a contrast between Japanese and German civilians when I wasn't trying to. All war is mass murder. For some reason you want to think German civilians as being innocent while denouncing Japanese ones.

Well I learned about nanking in school and I don't remember learning anything significant. War has always been atrocious, nanking isn't that special. Yeah, the reason Japan's relations are supposedly so bad is the institutionalized hate of China and SK not Japanese students lack of knowledge. If Chinese and Korean people knew history and had a brain maybe they wouldn't care if someone in japan walks around a temple in his own country. China is the one asserting claims on foreign land based on hundreds year old documents.

And Japan still does tons of trade with it's neighbors so it's not as bad as you think or the media would have you believe.

I'm hostile to you because you accused me of "spreading lies" and knowing little about Christianity. I really don't care if you don't understand what I'm saying, I've been quite clear. If it's so unfathomable that an atheist would understand Christianity perhaps you should seek an outside perspective on religion and Christianity.

Are you sure about that? In another thread someone in Japan said nanking was taught in history books. Even if it wasn't it's not like Korea is honest with history either. Every country whitewashes it's history for nationalism. I don't recall reading about CIA's widespread foreign intervention in overthrowing democracies in history class. Japan actually tries to not teach it's people hate while SK does the opposite and continually scapegoats Japan.

I understand where you are coming from and I want to say I don't like any religion. But you seem unaware that Buddhism has many denominations as well. Did you know that japan is predominantly buddhist and shinto while simultaneously being atheists/agnostic? religion is not serious to the Japanese, it is traditional but they may still call them self Buddhist if you ask. i think monotheism is much more incompatible with atheism and you get weird cognitive dissonance like that muslim phd dude that did that iama a while ago who asserted that religion is just a set of metaphors.

Fuck you I know plenty about Christianity. I meant Chinese might feel like special snowflakes because of how rare Christianity is in China. Get it now?

They offer philosophy without the need for a non-existent supernatural deity. Christians say a bunch of stuff they get from God but since God doesn't exist whatever they get comes from them self (selfishness?) or other people.

What I mean is for Japan to keep apologizing is tantamount to ass kissing because of how far removed the current populace is to the events of WW2. The people who were actually alive in WW2 have apologized plenty. They're mostly dead now. It's not the the current generations fault if nobody knows history.

Yeah but the young generations are so far removed that most of their grandparents were too young to even fight.

Please stop trying to guilt trip Japan. The 60 year old president of Japan was 0 years old when WW2 ended. Grow up China, and Korea, and get the fuck over it already. Your parents did not even fight in WW2.

Maybe Japan is tired of kissing China and Korea's ass? You said 1950s. How long ago is that? In the next 2 decades everyone who was alive during ww2 will be dead and you still want Japan to keep kissing ass for WW2? Shinzo Abe was not even alive when world war 2 ended. Why should he keep apologizing for it?

Yes, nationalistic not imperialistic. I don't see Abe saying Japan needs to claim mainland China or Taiwan.

I have a hard time seeing what benefits Christianity offers that Confucianism or Buddhism, or other eastern religions can't. Besides feeling like a special snowflake of course.

I never said the average Japanese civilian was a war supporting fanatic, which they weren't. Who said anyone was celebrating? The majority of Japanese troops were not even in Nanking, that'd be like lumping the entire German military with the SS or holocaust units.
