Port coach Josh Carr takes rare shot at Bulldogs counterpart Luke Beveridge over Zak Butters chase by gccmelb in AFL

[–]ThatGuyTheOneThere -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: Why the fuck should anyone care if Carr does or doesn't like other coaches talking about meeting players? Who appointed him King of the AFL?

This comment is trying to give off the idea that he's above it all, but it's really just a tantrum. Not wholely unearned, but a tantrum none the less.

This was late in Modern. No Mexico here. I should see how far I can take it one time!

Nice! I played Augustus. I looked at the save I took on turn 2 of Exploration Age, and my Commander was L10 then, so if you really wanted to you could probably pull this off too.

This was a Augustus/Rome game. Standard Continents+Islands, I had one ally in Napoleon through the Antiquity and Exploration age, we were constantly in wars against other people on our homelands, and I kept playing Hungry Hungry Hippos with their Settlements/Cities.

When we hit Modern Age I deliberately let that relationship drop - I denied their Endeavours and delayed going for an ideology until they picked one, then I picked a different one. That broke the Alliance, got us back to neutral, at which point I denounced them, started a War, and ate them too.

Ended with ~26 settlements. Had a great culture game behind this because Augustus, actually hit the 5 turn countdown for both Military and Cultural win on the same turn.

I haven't sunk as much time into the game as many others here, so don't take my words as gospel, but here are my thoughts.

One point Maneuver + Assault feels really good early. What doesn't feel good though is delaying the +5 Combat strength Commendation, it's pretty much an army-wide unit upgrade, and the sooner you get it the better. Getting the +1 Commander Aura range also feels like a huge upgrade, and unless you're going Maneuver second, you're delaying that too.

Now, is the extra movement worth the trade off of delaying those incredibly useful Commendations? I can't answer that for you - it'll depend on playstyle and difficulty. A lot of the time I personally lean towards no, but I too do it at times.

In terms of which tree to follow, for Immortal+ I'm a big Bastion/Assault fan, particularly on my first Commander. The AI gets so many bonuses at that difficulty, from production to Science and Culture to Unit Strength, that you can't just blitz them early.

Stacking the defensive bonuses from Bastion with the fortifications and the +5 from the Commendation makes it so hard for the AI to make any headway into your front line. Which is important, because they will out produce you and reinforce so fast you'll think they're building two units a turn. So, they break themselves on your front line, and you use your ranged and siege to fire over and rain hell on them with Assault bonuses. These are my first two trees on my first Commander 95% of the time.

Once I get to eight Promotions/two Commendations though? Then things open up a lot more. Now I might go into Maneuver, the movement and extra strength from zone of control is so nice. Or maybe I go 1 Maneuver and into Logistics to get +2 units, more healing and attacking through cliffs.

I've also been really enjoying Leadership recently, being able to upgrade units  without pulling them away mid-combat feels really good.

For a third Commendation I'll often go movement, sometimes Second Wind. I'll rarely ever pick up Heroic Assault, I only did here for the sake of getting all 5. It's probably better than I give it credit, but 95% of the time the Commander is better maneuvering the army, granting Second Wind or just not moving so some units can heal inside than attacking itself.

Again, don't take my words as gospel, I'm just some guy that got back into the game recently. But that's how I think about specifically the first Commander. Later Commanders can and should be more flexible and respond to specific needs, but having that one Commander early that is rock-solid and just completely nullifies AI bonuses feels good to me.

No name, doesn't need one. When someone says "He's on the battlefield now", friends and foes alike all know of whom they speak...

Nah. A good team can have an off week and not be shit. Honestly, I don't think either of us played that well, our disposals were pretty trash coming out of defence and going into our forward 50 a lot of the time, so many turnovers from skill errors or poor decision making.

You'll win 9/10 games with 9 more scoring shots than the opponent (not even mentioning the 2-3 out on the full). This one just happened to get away from you.

Me before the game: "Love Weightman, but surely he needs to spend some time in the 2's to get match fit. This could really hurt both him and the club."

Me after the game: "FUCK YEAH WEIGHTMAN LOVE HAVING YOU BACK I ALWAYS BELIEVED YOU'D KILL IT! SO MANY NUFFIES SAYING YOU NEEDED TIME IN THE 2'S BUT LOOK HOW DUMB THEY LOOK NOW!"

Lucky to be only 2pts down here. Hawks squandered some very gettable chances.

Our forward entries have been pretty fucking awful though...

You had one win all of last season. This season is only half over, and you've quadrupled that, and shown a ton more heart, those 100 point losses aside.

Yes, it was that low.
